I'm thinking about dropping singleshot stage 1 or (but no bigger than) stage 2s into my 7.3 and then putting a turbo on...38 or h2e? My primary concern is EGTs...
I don't care about HP numbers or the dyno, really looking for a great DD that I can tow with and not worry about mountain passes. On inclines the Ex feels like it's loosing power and up-shifting to keep speed. I bought the truck with a Banks exhaust housing, intercooler (thanks Niel) and wheel in the turbo.
I'm not looking to make big HP numbers. I just want the truck to have enough power that it doesn't feel like it's struggling with itself.
Hoping to hear from the "did that" group...are injectors and a turbo the best way to go with this?
You don't need the turbo or injectors if you don't want more power. Get you a good custom chip with tow tunes like I have, , and you should be good to go.
Well, you do have the most important mods, air intake, exhaust to move on foward to a nicely tuned chip. Like mentioned above, that would yield the power you'll need without going overboard.
Wait, is the Banks exhaust housing a 1.0 a/r? That's larger than stock and should make a nice difference in the EGTs. What're you seeing now?
x2 The banks houseing and wheel should have the turbo taken care of. I would just go with a good intake (like the 6637) and 4" exhaust and a tuner.
Do you have gauges? If not I would also add those.
You can do all the above for less than the cost of the 38r turbo alone.
He's got an aFe intake and 4" exhaust already. I'm with the others -- get a tuner with a good tow tune or two and see what that gets you. Injectors would certainly make a big difference, but I wouldn't go more than Stage 1s with that turbo. Stage 2s, and you'd need at least a van turbo or 38r.
The banks is the 1.0 housing, wheel and intercooler to help with EGTs. I do want to go with a tuner but as long as I'm getting a chip might as well go with stage 1/stage 2 injectors...the question is will stage 2 work with the current turbo setup? EGTs are my primary concern. If it doesn't, what is the best solution...cost/benefit....van? 38r? h2e? Remember that big HP is not the intent.
Then go stage 1s, and keep the turbo. If the EGTs stay in control, you're golden. If they get too high for you, look at a van turbo or 38r. Rich (WhiteBuffalo) tows with Swamps 175/146 singles and a van turbo all the time.
Stage II's would destroy a stock turbo even with the housing and the wheel. I absolutely love the stage II and H2E setup. But probably a little more than what you are looking for. Get a chip and see how you like it.

I've had tunes before on another truck. My personal issue with them is it seems like it's asking more of the motor with less. I'd like to supplement tunes with injectors/turbo rather than just using a chip to achieve the gains I want.
I currently have ISSPRO EV2 gauges, just installed them last weekend. The truck had a banks pyro gauge installed but it is in the downpipe. The hottest I've seen it get is 600. The pyro on my isspro gauges isn't installed / drilled yet. Just got home from work, been there since 5:30 this morning.
Maybe I'm thinking about this wrong. Would it make sense to get the turbo first and then the injectors? Really interested if anyone in CO has close to these mods and would be willing to meet up with me so I could see them first hand...
