Where are you going sledding Jay? Have fun!
Dang Mike that must have hurt. Makes my head hurt just thinking about it. Once you get some pics uploaded be sure to post some of your ratrod. I know what you mean by getting exspensive but they are fun and remember its only money.
Sounds like we'll be headed to the Motley area tomorrow to get one of the wife's horses back from a lady that was boarding him.
My 6 year old boy had a reading get to gather at school yesterday morning. When I came home after that I noticed that one of my cows had a calf. It was just laying there on the ground and I figured that it was dead. I walked up to it and it was still alive, so I picked it up and brought it under the lean to so it was away from the other animals. It's mom didn't even seem to care about it, she was to busy eating the afterbirth. After I got her in the lean to with the calf, she still didn't pay any attention to it. Usually she's a good mother, and licks, and cleans her babies off well. This time she didn't want anything to do with it. I told myself that this year I wasn't going to intervene, I was going to just let things happen.
I went to the junk yard to get some parts, and when I got home I noticed that the calf hadn't moved at all. Usually the calves are up and walking around within a half hour, eating from mama. So here I go, I went to the house and grabbed a bottle. I milked the cow into this bottle. I got 2 pints out of her. And proceeded to teach this calf how to eat. Once she caught on she finished that bottle up pretty fast. Here I'm thinking "ya I wasn't going to intervene, now I'm out here milking this stupid cow".
I went out there last night to milk her again and feed the baby, but the baby was up and walking around. It looked like she had been nursing finally, and she was pretty spunky. So I just let them be. I had the attitude this year of if the cows and calves are to dumb to take care of them selves, then they will die. It's natures way of weeding out the weak ones. I couldn't sit there and let this calf die. Maybe it wouldn't die,and I worry to much. Who knows. I only have 3 cows left now, I sold a few last fall. I wanted to go in a different direction in life, and not have to worry about these animals, but it looks like that's not going to happen. Maybe there is a reason why I'm not in Texas right now working...
