I have just replaced the rear leaf springs and shocks and am in the process of doing the front and replacing i beam and radius rod bushings. I acquired a set of spindles and disc brakes from a friend for notta off of a 77 1/2 ton 2wd. what king pin do i need to use to install these spindles on my 66 i beams and what proportioning valve do i use. also how many psi residual does that valve and master cyl keep on the brakes. i also need to know which master cylinder to use. i can make the linkage work if needed. later i intend to do discs on the back also. thanks for any input you guys have!
Short answer... either one will work if you are using new bushings and having them reamed to size. I swapped '78 spindles onto '66 I-Beams and used the '66 kingpins with no problems. However, I believe I could (maybe should) have used the '78 kinpins. The '78 pins are 1/8" longer and .0001 inch larger.
I think about any mid-seventies 2wd proportioning valve and m/c would work. You have to pay attention to the pedal ratio for the booster (whole 'nuther subject). If buying new, get the '77 stuff... easy to remember for replacement parts.
It all depends on what year I Beams you are using..... they have to match the I beams because of where the pinch bolt is located. the spindles do not mater when doing the swap, the pin size is the same.
so yes, BigDaddy needs the 75/79 king pin set if he is using 77 beams.
great info guys thanks! ive got the 77 king pin set and they are going to fit nicely. i dont intend to use power brakes for the time being so a booster is not needed just a m/c to fit on the firewall. i can fabricate the link if need be. not sure where to find the osolete proportioning valve though and do i need to do anything about the shorter steering stop on the 77 spindles or does the gear actually let it turn that far without problems? thanks for all your help!
The so-called brake light switch is actually: C8AZ2B264A .. Low Brake FluidWarning Light Switch.
1967 and later vehicles w/a dual master cylinder have a warning light on the dash that is activated by this plastic switch (screws into the valve) when the brake fluid runs low.
It's not used prior to 1966, so just leave it in place.
