I'm planning on rebuilding my column in my '75 F-250. It is a column shift auto, w/o tilt wheel. I will pull one from the boneyard so I can work on it while driving.
What bothers me is that there are no bearings to replace, either upper or lower, just plastic bushings. The shifting mechanism is loose too, but it's difficult to tell from the exploded view diagram what parts are needed.
I have not done one in years. They used to have problems with the hole wearing in the shift tube making them sloppy. That and wear of the rectangular tab welded on the tube. I do remember the plastic bushings! People would use the steering wheel to pull their "ample" bodies up into the 4X4's and destroy the bushings!
Here is the easiest fix for your problem, find a 4X2 column, the ones I have found are all in good shape, remove the steering wheel, signal switch, remove clip holding the shaft in and it will fall out the bottom. Then
do the same on your 4X4, put your steering shaft in the 4X2 column and use the steel retainer ( has allen screws so it can be adjusted) on the bottom of the 4X2 shaft and put the top back together and install in the truck. Couple of hrs and your back on the road.
