1952 Ford steering column/shift column separation

1952 Ford steering column/shift column separation
Hello,
I am converting my 52 Ford pickup from 3 speed on the column to a 5 speed floor shift. My question is how do you remove the column shifter from the steering column? To me it looks like the top end of the shifter column is riveted to the steering column.
How would one go about separating the two?

Yep, it's either riveted or spot welded, hard to tell. I think most people just leave it on there. Removing the rest of it is easy: http://www.flatheadv8.org/columnshift.pdf
