John Wood VB installed in a snap!

Hey guys, if you are looking at installing the John Wood VB it goes in really easy. Wear some nasty clothes and follow the instructions (with pics) that I used posted by a fellow FTE guru. I like the additional solid shifting gained from the JWVB and would recommend it to all. Here is the post that helped me put it in in only two hours, and thats from getting out of the truck to verifying the tranny fluid level.

Have a great night! I have some drag racing to do!

Alex

Glad you posted up Alex, really an easy job, congrats. Enjoy the more firmer crispier shifts now. Just keep an eye on your trans dipstick, the fluid level, check it for a day or two to make sure you have it up to mark, just for good measure.

Not sure I'd use that title for myself but glad I could be of help.

You're gonna love the way your truck shifts. Now just make sure you clean yourself up really well. I broke out like crazy after I did mine from all that stupid ATF.

I thought the real problems with these trannies was the torque converter. The VB makes that much difference?

It's both. The TC is a bit lossy (making heat), but the shifts are loooooong and sloooowww. The VB mods make it shift almost instantly. I personally mod'ed my own, and I recommend that to anyone that is decently mechanically inclined. Here is a graphical representation of what I mean:

yeah, I like how it shifts faster than with just the TCM reprogram but it doesn't shift any harder. Very quick but doesn't slam, just like the ad on riffraff says! and for how easy it was it was well worth the labor

The spring rate of the new springs behind the accumulator valves/pistons increase the speed at which the clutches are applied pressure. At least, that's the way I interpet it. Firmness is related to pressure that is regulated by the line presure modulator valve and electronic pressure control solenoid/valve by the PCM.

TransGo uses three springs in each valve bore. They are sized so the second slides into the first, and the third slides into the second. A long one that is real soft so it compresses quickly, a shorter one that compresses a little slower, then a short one that is quite stiff to stop the piston. So the piston moves fast at first, then slows as it hits the second and third spring.
