Well today I just ordered the JWVB for my Excursion from Clay! I really don't know how much it will help my tired transmission but its worth a shot. At least when it goes in for a re-build I know there is a quality VB in it. I have a few odd shifts when the trans is cold but once its warmed up it seems to be ok. My question is, Is it just as simple as draining the pan, removing filter and VB bolts, install new VB, Torque the bolts to 10? IN pounds, and re install filter and new fluid? The fluid and filter have about 12k on it but for my paranoia im going to install a new motorcraft filter and fresh fluid in the pan. The fluid is still nice and red and smells good but, should I flush the entire thing again? Ive never really done much to transmissions so It cant hurt to ask
It's that simple... I did mine in about an hour (with beer breaks and Goofing off. Just make sure to grab yourself a nice big piece of plastic to lay down on the ground... There will be transmission fluid everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE!!! Oh and don't wear your favorite shirt that day either... did I mention you are going to have fluid EVERYWHERE?
I don't see any reason to flush out the rest of the system, just fill the pan back up and you're good to go. I installed the VB on my tired old trans about a year ago and it definitely improved things. Best thing about the JW VB is when time comes for a JW trans, he credits you back for the VB. Good luck and enjoy!
Pull the drain plug, have two beers. Remove the pan and loosten the valvebody, and have two beers. Then remove the valvebody and the red rain is not so bad on you. It worked for me. If you try and hurry it can be real messy.
I just finished installing my VB tonite. The toughest part was getting the torque convertor cover plate bolt by the starter. Use a tarp with a pool and lots of shop rags. Altogether I went thru 14 quarts of Schaeffer's ATF. Man, that stuff has a nasty smell to it! Took it for a 10 mile ride and i love how the shifts are quicker but not harsh. Even light throttle shifts feel good.
Also, make sure you pull the CORRECT valve body. Pull the wrong one and you'll have check ***** falling out, then a quick and painful headache will ensue.
I finished installing the JWVB tonight and it was easy but messy! I gave up on trying to catch it in a pan so I just basically let it run everywhere. After getting it all back together I only used about 9.5 qts during the re-fill. My transmission shifts so much better than it has! No more tiny slip just a nice, quick, firm shift! Now at WOT the transmission stopped banging into gear! Thanks for all your input. Also during the swap UPS showed up with my X codes
