I've never trashed a Ford starter yet but I either rebuild myself or take them to a local shop to get rebuilt when I work on them for other people. Never cost me more than 40-45 bucks yet on a powerstroke. Have you considered getting one rebuilt at all? I trust this local shop a lot more than I trust some aftermarket manufacturer in Mexico.
First thing I did was take mine to the local shop, been here for years. He wanted $80 just to fix the problem and another $100 to overhaul it.
I've rebuilt them myself too, and the kit and new solenoid cost almost as much as a new one from DB, which was still cheaper than having the local shop fix it. Shop guy said they use off-shore parts anyway since nobody in the US makes them anymore, so it's not like you're getting better parts either.
Oh, and I gave the shop guy DB's website and told him to check them out. He was kind of excited about it, too...
