When it hangs, lift the hood and ****** the arm closest to the fire wall upward to free it up.
Slightly pull the shifter towards the steering wheel lifting it out of 1st. let it fall completely in neutral towards the dash,
and with a very slight pull back again lift it into 2nd.
See if that helps until you can get new bushings in.

Thanks jowilker for this tidbit of knowledge, I'll definitely give it a try.
I will also be getting the kit# C5TZ7343A that Number Dummy suggested.
It may not make any sense, but that's the way the tranny worked back then. To prevent it from grinding into 1st, you either a uble clutch or come to a complete stop.
1961/62 F100/250's have the Borg-Warner 3 speed manual with a non syncromesh (crash) 1st gear.
Beginning in 1963, F100/250's came with the Ford type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh manual trans.
1953/71 F100's with the Borg-Warner 3 speed manual with overdrive all have a non syncro 1st gear.
I have a 62 3 on the tree as well, I have the opportunity to purchase a rebuilt 3 speed from a 67 f100 with the side shifters, having a synchro in 1st is ideal... would this be a simple swap? my engine is a 223 and the one that I'm looking at comes with the bell housing from a 352.
