I know I'm chiming in a little late on this one Rat617, but I had problems with 2nd and 3rd on my '66 and when I took the column apart I found that the hole in the shift tube where the shifter goes in was worn out to where if I moved the shifter instead of letting the spring do it I would pull the tit out of the hole and then I had to coast to the side of the road and wiggle and move the lever tell it went back in the hole then I could go back to driving.
Thank you all for all of your help. one of the linkages, at the tranny, was held on by a pop top instead of the factory Ford clip. I replaced it with an e-clip and some washers and tightened the tranny arm a little and the thing started shifting great!! Just a little bit of slop caused all of my worry. I am having a problem finding a new stock clip for the linkages. I've tried all of the catalogs, LMC, MAC, Carpenter, etc. and none have any left. I guess I'm down to going to the salvage yards. Right now the e-clip is holding, but it seems kinda flimsy for longterm use. Thanks again guys.

Grinding in first and reverse indicates to me a possible clutch adjustment is required or maybe a replacement. On the 66 with shifting issues look at the lower bearing (same as the upper). These will rust and fail causing all kinds of issues. Best plan would be to pull the column and overhaul it. Once you get 40+ years of rust and crud off the parts it is often obvious where the problem lies.
The people behind me just love it when I miss second.
I did the bushings from dennis carpenter. Helped a lot.
Also, like mentioned above, my roll pin hole was egged out. Actually, it was only catching on one side. Put a longer pin in and helped even more. I still have play at the shifter on the column, I'll work on it when it gets warmer.
Hey Numberdummy I have found everything I need to rebuild my column except 3 things. I'm looking for shifter arms C5TZ-7302A, C5TZ-7303A & gear shift insulator 01A-7246B. I'm going to go ahead and rebuild everything while I have it out. Do the shift arms usually wear out? I got stuck in traffic the other day between 1st and 2nd gear and it sucked. I had to lift the hood and lign up the arms again and I was good to go. It just really sucks with 5 cars behind you. Thanks for all of your help.
any idea where i can get the C5TZ7343A part? I tried ftepartsguy.com per an earlier post and they sell through a ford dealer now and don't carry it, i called a local daeler and he couldn't seem to find it for me eithe. Any help would be appreciated.
check them out. They have a lot of parts nobody else had.
hey thanks a bunch man, a little more pricey than ford at 20 bucks each, he stated i needed 2... Still 50 bucks to be able to shift sounds like a steal to me. Ordered over the phone, will go out in the mail today he said
btw: I assume you didn't read post #4. All the info is listed for this obsolete kit, and there are more TX sources listed.
I did actually, but none of them are within driving distance so i went with the mail order guy he recommended after the ford dealer offered no help finding more. He called back and corrected the mistake while i was eating lunch, so 1 kit should be in the mail for me today. No offense to ford parts guys in general of course, was just unhappy that the guy i called in town wouldn't/couldn't look up other dealers for me.
they may have mailed in a lady's hair color box, but it sure came in fast. order was done in the afternoon, and here in 2 days
What's the easiest way to remove the bushings at the shift levers in the truck. Do they pry off after removing the clip. What about lining up the linkage after?
OK, a bit of a newbie here. I was trying to follow the thread and found information that seemed a bit contradictory. I have a 1962 Ford F-100 (3 speed manual). Shifting down into 1st grinds. Some have told me that is normal and you must come to a stop to shift into first. That doesn’t seem to make sense. Is there something else I should consider? Operator error? Transmission problem?
Thanks,

It may not make any sense, but that's the way the tranny worked back then. To prevent it from grinding into 1st, you either have to double clutch or come to a complete stop.
1961/62 F100/250's have the Borg-Warner 3 speed manual with a non syncromesh (crash) 1st gear.
Beginning in 1963, F100/250's came with the Ford type 3.03 3 speed all syncromesh manual trans.
1953/71 F100's with the Borg-Warner 3 speed manual with overdrive all have a non syncro 1st gear.
