Too much cam?

Ok guys I'm about to pull the trigger on a Comp cams #35-239-3 for a 351w. Is this too much for a street engine? I'll be going w/ dual plane intake, 650 carb, slightly ported heads (64-66cc) and AOD tranny. I just don't know what to expect w/ this combo? Any ideas?

As performance cams go, it's kind of small. It should idle pretty smooth. Looks like a good combination for a street motor.

I regularly suggest the Comp cams 35-238-3 for this exact same combination, Dyno sims show a very broad powerband with over 360TQ all the way across and close to 300hp. This cam has slightly more overlap which is better for TQ and slightly less valve lift which won't stress the stock springs as much. Somewhere around 0.500" lift is generally accepted as the max lift the stock springs can tolerate and the heads don't flow any better with more lift so there's really no point pushing it further. This cam produces slightly more output than the 35-239-3 on DesktopDyno.

Conanski,
Let me ask you if it will make any difference that my heads do have after market springs which should hold up better than stock. Will that factor in on the cam choice, or is the 35-238-3 still the better one to go with? Are these cams even different? The specs look identical, 262 dur. w/ 493 lift. One is listed as high energy and the other a 4x4 extreme?

Aftermarket springs are good for preventing valve float but won't make any difference to head flow at higher lift. And yes the cams are nearly identical but not quite and as already stated the 35-238-3 appears to make slightly more TQ and HP so it doesn't make any sense to choose the other cam.

Both those cams show that a valve spring change is needed at installation according to the notes for them.It also shows that the 35-239-3 camshaft is dual pattern. How did you come out on your hunt for pistons?

I also meant to mention that I am not a Windsor expert.I typically build 335 series.Don't know Windsor valve train limits, but I do know that stock Cleveland springs go into a bind and go solid at .490 valve lift. With them,if you are going to run a cam of higher lift you have to change the springs.

ozblitz, Is the transmission going to remain stock or do you plan on doing some modifications to it?

I like the Comp 35-255-5 for a stock headed 351w with stock stall converter. It builds torque quick and has good idle quality.

I was able to find flat top Silvo-lite Hypertctic pistons, so that should give me a little bump in comp/ratio. The tranny is going to be a stock rebuild w/ a shift kit, not sure what else I could do interally. I'll likely have a stock converter.
