I had my starter checked today. When cold my 76 F-100 360 starts great however when hot it barely cranks and draws about 400 AMPS. Does this sound like a bad starter or wiring problem?
It could be either. Check all the large wires from the battery to the starter relay, from the starter relay to the starter and from the battery to ground for corrosion and breaks in the insulation. The wires should be at least 6 awg, the bigger the better which means the smaller the wire size number the better.
It could be that the starter is getting too hot and thus drags when starting. If you have headers without a heat sheild this could definitly be the problem. Excessive heat is very hard on the starter windings insulation.
Good luck.
check your timing.timeing is very touchy on 360/390`s.my75f-100 390 had the same problem.with the right timeing it should be ok.make sure your battery ground is good an clean. hope this helps.
