Excessive Starter Current draw!

I'd never experienced this kind of Current draw before.
When I crank the engine the Battery cables get so hot they smoke. Even the Start Relay's burn!!!! I had three of them. I finally had to take one apart and sand the Contacts to get it to work.
It's cooked the Ignition switch too. I replaced the Switch part, but it looks like It's in need of the Plastic Connector on the back of the switch as well.
I replaced the Battery Cable end's as well.

I've just put new Rings, bearings, Cam Shaft, Cam Bearings and lapped the Valves in this engine. It has a new starter from AutoZone.
I've turned it over with a Ratchet and it's Pretty free.

Am I missing something here?

Excessive Starter Current draw!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 17-Jun-02 AT 10:33 PM (EST)]Have you turned the engine over manually yet?

I assumed from your writing, that you turned the starter over with a ratchet.

Have you bench tested the starter?

Have you had your oreo's and milk?

Oreo's, that's it!!!

I learned the Siezed bearing, and borken ring lesson way back in the Fifty's.
I turn it over at the installation of every new part.

Nope! This is something new to me.....

I hate to be the master of the obvious, but you have a short somewhere and I have a donut to your cookie that it's in the starter. Just because it's new or rebuilt doesn't mean it was done right! Read my story in conversation.

Thud,

Does the motor actually turn over at all, or do the wires just smoke when the key is turned on?

I would have auto zone test the starter. but if you just rebuilt the engine then MAKE SURE that ALL of the grounds are clean and connected properly. and even add a couple while you are there.
