ok guys, this is ergent, sort of an emergency. I am having brake issues... I am guessing it is the booster but just wanna make sure. It is on my 88 F250. And here is whats going on. Brakes work good, BUT if i hit the pedal more than once in like 30 seconds, the times after the first i have no power brakes, than they come back after about 30 sec.... SO CONFUSING Also, my booster does make a lil hiss when i push on the pedal, and i know that is not right. Is there anythign else that can cause this? Need fixed ASAP as this is my plow truck and we have 6 inches of snow coming....
One of two things, either you have a vacuum leak (like a bad booster) or the vacuum pump is bad or the drive belt is bad.
If you pull the vacuum pipe off the booster and with engine running put the palm of your hand on the end of the pipe. If the vacuum pump is good it should feel like it wants to suck your hand into the pipe.
If you have a vacuum gauge it should show around 20in of vacuum.
booster and master cyl look newer. and i believe they were replaced when i bought the truck, cant be positive on that. i will check the pump. This sucks cause we are getting freezing rain! and the truck doesnt fit in the garage... I would much rather replace the booster than vacuum pump tho... Its about half the price and just a little bit easier to get to...
ok, so it is the pump.... not too excited to replace this... i know i gotta use a pulley puller to get it done... i just really dont wanna do this in the 36 degree weather and rain...
I did the vacuum tests, and sure enough, low vacuum...
So any tips to get it in and out quickly would be much appreciated
Do a search here for "vacuum pump" there should be lots of info on fitting one.
Had to replace a rad a couple of years ago in similar conditions so i don`t envy you.
Good luck.
all i can say, even tho its wet and cold, atleast its not 30 below... haha. if that was the case, i would take it to a local diesel shop that my other truck is at right now and just borrow the shop for a couple hours...
Well it looks like im off to the parts store in 2 hours when they open... Another $110 bucks into this truck... the last 3 weeks has been hell on my pocket book and trucks... Water pump just went on this thing too, wish the vac pump would have gone at the same time.
It only takes about 10 minutes to get off, a lio of dealers have to order the pulley.
Most parts houses will pull and install your pulley for 5 bucks or left.
I got the pump from orielys, and had the ford dealer swap pulleys, i actually removed the old pump in the parking lot, brought both in, said, ok, i need this pulley on the new pump, the tech asked why i didnt just bring the truck, and he just laughed when i told him its in the parking lot and i did the work out there. He swapped the pulley for free.
