i have an 01 xlt and believe that i need brakes. my brake light and abs light have been on for a few days but have not noticed any problems until yesterday i noticed that my brakes were stuttering or learching, and then became soft upon stopping, making it very difficult to stop the car since the pedal was almost to the floor. this only happened for a short while and then returned to semi-normal. would this be my pads, rotors, or an abs issue?
if this is a brake issue do i need to remove the axle nut on the rear to take off the drum?
another question is about a hissing from the brake pedal, is this from the brake booster? i have noticed a small amount of fluid coming from around the brake booster, is this also a problem?
The stuttering and lurching is probably coming from your pads and shoes no longer having any lining. Typically when an ABS goes bad it looses its seal and your tires will lock up when pressing hard on the pedal at speed.
Determine where the fluid is coming from on your booster. The hiss is coming from the booster it is a vacuum seal. Can this be fixed by replacing the seal or will you need to replace the booster. Jack it up. Put it on jack stands. Remove the tires. Inspect the front pad linings for thickness and rotors for grooves & warpage. Pull the rear drums (you'll know what it takes when you look at it). Inspect the shoe linings for thickness and drums for grooves. If your drums or rotor need work place them in a box. Now take your box of rotors/drums to the parts store have them turn them or replace if out of specs. Pick up new pads, shoes, and booster. Don't forget to get a big bottle of brake fluid. Now go put your car back together.
Sorry, but you are a danger to anyone else on the road around you when a problem of that magnitude shows up.
Those lights are called idiot lights for a reason.
If you're experiencing a low pedal it's because you have air in your hydraulic brake system. There is air in your brake system because one of your components leaked fluid to the point to where there is no more fluid (causing your light to come on).
Either you blew a line, a wheel cylinder, master cylinder, or ran the brakes so low that the caliper pistons blew out.
Although rudely put, DoctorCAD is entirely correct. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS TO YOU AND TO OTHERS TO OPERATE YOUR VEHICLE IN THIS CONDITION. Take no offense, but if you don't know how to remove a brake drum, then you need to have it TOWED to a service facility for repairs, as you likely do not have the technical know how to fix it yourself anyway.
WOW...guys let's help and not ridicule...that is what we are here for.
....sometimes many members ask question because they want help...and do not know what is wrong... don't lambaste them because you know, not far at all....And I don’t care how dangerous the situation is, it is not our responsibility to call other members names, it is within our ability to eloquently explain in detail why it is a dangerous situation, without lowering ourselves to name calling.
Get them the help they need and get them down the road as safe as possible...now back on track and amiele, let us know how it comes out.
Wow, I take a couple days away from the computer and you guys got ugly without me.
Amile, take heart, all is not as bad as you may think. GuyinSTL is probably right that the reason your warning light is on is because you are low on fluid. This happens because; 1 you loose fluid or 2 your brake linings are so low that the fluid level drops to keep your linings a safe proximity to your rotors and or drums. Do what I told you earlier (albeit bluntly) and let us know what you find. There may be more to your problem or you might find that it will end up being a simple fix.
If my bluntness is what got the ugly going, then I will try to be more sensitive.
