i hope someone has a idea i have some powerstroke moters and want to put them in my sons trucks with out having to completly redo the hole truck there a 92 and a 94 4x4 have every thing but the harness any ideas i have two other trucks powerstroke mine and my wifes and the boys love them the old trucks were 7.3 idi help
Up to mid 94 there were no power stroke engines. 94 did have a 7.3 with the ATS turbo from the factory. It was cut back power wise and had a smaller turbo exhaust outlet, along with a smaller, very misshapen down pipe.
The 6.9-7.3 up to that point would start and run with only the fuel line hooked up, 1 wire to the fuel shut off on the injection pump and batteries hooked up. Other hook ups would be for oil, water, alternator, cold advance, glow plugs. Actually pretty basic.
You would need to figure out engine mounts. Gasoline transmissions and bell housings do NOT swap onto the 6.9-7.3, they are diesel specific. Likely would need larger radiator.
I may have read your post wrong also. Are the engines or the trucks 92 and 94? If you are swapping in actual power strokes then you still need the correct transmissions along with the engine computer to wire up.
the 7.3 and the 460 use the same bellhousing, the only issue is with the auto trans the potential internal gearing differenc. the manual transmissions in the diesel to me, are more desireable because the first gear isnt useless superlow like the manual gas engine.
The 460 bell is close but will not bolt up. You can modify the 460 bell to fit. I believe there's an article on oil burners about how to mod the 460 bell.
DaveS in the IDI forum has a pic of the 460 and 6.9 bells that shows how close they are.
there is something about the starters a friend of mine had mentioned, and then I searched and found a few threads. Seems liek the old idi engines may be compatible but the newer ones are not.
A T18 or T19 will swap from a gasser but you still need the bell housing from a diesel. The ZF's have an integrated bell so it must come from a diesel. Even the 6 speed will swap in from a powerstroke with a few mods to the input shaft, with 4x4 it's easier to keep the transfer case that comes with the ZF6. Other problem is after around 94' the speedometer runs off a sensor in the rear axle instead of off a drive gear in the transfer case.

false. absolutely not true, and anyone who says so is feeding you a line of bull stuffing.
the gas transmissions will not work on a diesel engine. if you try to modify the bellhousing to adapt it, you will only ruin the trans.
What tjc said. The gas tranny will not work on any 6.9, 7.3 idi or stroke period, end of story. Unless the gas tanks have changed they will work if you change the sending unit.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the 460 trans will work. The top two holes in the trans have to be drilled out to 1/2" and the dowels have to be repositioned.
Wow dude... 6 years late.
It's been a controversial topic on wether or not a 6.9/7.3 idi, and the 7.3 psd, and the 460 can utilize the same trans. Until anyone has photographic proof, let's just call it a day.

Doing some searching, now I know why people bring up old threads all the time. So now it's time for me to be aggravating and bring up an old thread to the top. The picture below clearly shows the differences between a idi diesel and the 460 bellhousing patterns. The 460 transmission below has already been drilled to accept the diesel engine.
i just don't understand why someone would weaken the trans housing by redrilling it when they can sell the current trans and buy an unmolested one for the same amount, or less.
