Truth be told I rather enjoy driving stick. We've got a 4wd turbodiesel ranger thats a 5 speed and its a joy to drive in the snow or highway even though the tranny is high miles and showing its age by now. My saturn will be a clutchless 5 speed setup when its done and in the brief test drives I took it on, I loved every minute. You are much more in tune with the vehicle.
For my truck however, I wanted something that can be easy to control on steep inclines and not be tiring on longer drives. I guess you can say I like manual transmission as a friend, but nothing serious. Although I still use manual over ride in many cases when driving my E4OD and always know what gear I am in and if the converter is locked. My tall gearing also makes for a wide range between shifts and the torque converter can bridge those gaps fairly well. I have it set up right now to mimic a 5 speed (1, 2, 3, 3 locked, 4 locked), and gear spread is pretty good without much dead zone anywhere.
Yea on long trips I take of and have to shift 3 times and hit the gv switch, then usually around 275 miles I stop and fuel reqireing about 5 more shifts. It's a workout I tell you. lol

Sounds nice. Unfortunately there are urban sections that get worse every year it seems. Lots of stop and go, and after driving a truck with a stock ZF5, I found the clutch to be too heavy for my taste. SMF was better but that gets pricy for something that isn't what I really want anyway. I don't seem to have good knees for a clutch that heavy. It was fun, but to do that all day isn't for me. Besides, my dad can drive stick too, but doesn't as often as me and its just easier if he has to use my truck for some reason.
We do lots of short trips across town for work, so there is that too. I'm not saying auto is better for stop and go, just that I prefer it.
The ZF5 clutch is heavy compared to others, that's my whole reason for thinking of doing a swap. For me it's bad feet from years of standing in front of a machine, I can drive lot's more with less fatigue in an automatic. Just don't want to lose too much mileage or towing power in the process.
