I have a 7.3 and auto trany from a 2wd truck. The truck no good any more and i found a 4wd gasser with a blown motor i would like to do a swap. What i need to know is if i can take the tail housing of the 7.3 trany off and bolt on a tcase or do i have to have a 4wd trany? And, if so do i have to get a diesel tcase or can i use one out of a gasser? The truck i'm buying is a 94 f150 4x4. I'm expecting that tcase won't work.
The BW 1356 Tcase was in place on all F150, 250, 350 and Bronco vehicles of the 7.3 vintage. So you should be ok with that part, but the 2wdrive tail housing will not convert......conversion requires the complete insides be removed due to the main shaft being different.... sorry. Also the gasser will have a different trans not adaptable for diesel use......sorry again.
you can use your diesel trans you just would need someone to disasemble both transmissions and install the outputshaft from the 4x4 trans into your diesel trans
For all the trouble of tearing down the transmissions, you may as well put a rebuild kit in there. Parts for the E4OD are not very expensive, I got many good upgrade parts off Ebay stores, but tearing into an E4OD is not for the faint of heart, and you need a good manual to do it. The tailshaft is held in my one of the most evil snap rings ever conceived, bring a full vocabulary when it comes time to pull the output shaft.
You must be rich!
Or I should say compared to what?!
Me rich? OK, that is funny.
Price wars on Ebay have driven the cost for many stock and upgrade parts down, although billet TCs are often still up there (sometimes found for $350). Used parts can be had for very good prices, and I got a few myself (like new condition).
If he is going through the trouble of making a good truck out of two donors, then why not but an overhaul kit in there if you are tearing the trannies down anyway? Overhaul kits are usually $100-$200, I paid $50 for a transgo shift kit/ correction package, had many goodies in it.
Thanks for input helps a lot i think that i may have found a diesel 350 4x4 with no motor goning to look at it tomorrow. But i don't get that one i'll just make it two wheel drive for now and wait for a 4x4 trany and the suspention i'm just gona put some 250 coils in and keep my foot out of it so nothing breaks. It's just gona be a daily driver i already have a 02 550 for towing.
E4OD parts are not that expensive i guess it depends on who you buy yours from , and i get a chuckle from many of those upgraded parts for big buicks , the only part that needs upgrading is the torque converter, beyond that a pump modification kit and a solid rebuild

Agreed, most of the "upgrades" are actually ford OEM, like the steel planetaries, and higher displacement pump. The aftermarket imput and output shafts are very expencive, along fancy clutch packs but I don't think they're needed in the real world. I've taken heat for saying this before, but I still say the E4OD can be as tough as the C6, or even better, but early years could use some work.
