Okay so where is the EGR and is it OK to unplug it to evaluate change in engine...ie mileage, etc

Unplugging the EGR will not enhance any performance gains, in stock form the EGR does help spool the turbo at lower RPM's. The purpose to disable the EGR is to eliminate soot recirculated from the exhaust into the intake. 04 and up will show a code and might actually interfere with engine performance.

Here is a birdseye view of it's location. It is okay to unplug it to see if it changes any symptoms. I don't think it's a good idea to just unplug it forever. Best to actually correct whatever issue you're having.
