I have a 3.73 rear end and would agree with your statement when I towed heavy in pure stock form on grades. I love the 1:1 ratio of 4th, it's a great working gear. To me 3rd attempts to bridge the gap needed by 2 gears way worse than 6th tho. But... with the "mods" I've done 6th is pretty good on grades towing 13k . I thought you had a 4.10 rear end, i would think it would help that gear gap out some.

I had a chance to get '04 18" rim's a couple years back and considered it very hard for a couple months, but going up to that size would require a regear for me to tow effectively; not cheap with 2 diffs on 4wheel drive

A re-gear to 4.10 is what I should have done in my case when I had the opportunity ( to get OD to pull better) but I re-used the 3.73 RP when the axle was fixed as there was nothing wrong with it and it wasn't in the budget. That is true though that putting larger diameter wheels/tires would not have done you any favors. Mine cant get any smaller really...225/75 on a 16" wheel. I don't think they even offer a lower profile tire for a LT application.
