2 speed rearends?

First of all Hi, I'm new here. I'm new to diesels, but not new to Ford trucks. I recently bought a 2000 F350 7.3L 4X4 Super Duty, extended cab with a 9ft Reading Utility box. Awesome truck. Love it. I'm curious is there such a thing as 2 speed rear ends for pickup trucks. Say low range for towing and high for flat out cruising and economy. I'm finding this and other Power Stroke Forums very helpful. I did a lot of reading on here before I bought the truck. Thanks in advance.

Nope, no such thing as two speed rear ends. However there are "gear splitters", an accessory overdrive unit to mate behind the transmission

Here is one option. Gear Vendors under/overdrive transmissions the most awarded auxiliary transmissions.

Dual Range Auxiliary Transmissions, Overdrive and Underdrive
this is the one I recommend. I've owned both the GearVendor and the US Gear.
the US Gear is a much tougher unit and more versatile
Check out my gallery for some pics of the install

Oh and HEY, welcome to FTE 7.3!!!

"Quick change" rear end?

Have you ever seen a real Halibrand Quick Change? It's a locked axle, no differential at all. It's just a big axle from one side to the other with a ring gear on it.

The "poor man's quick change" is the Ford 9 inch, too small.

Two speed axles for F600+ sized trucks are too big for an F350. The two previous suggestions for OD units are the only games in town. Plus, you could NEVER have a two speed on a 4x or all-wheel drive vehicle. Even if the front were a two speed, how would you match them shifting?

This one for manual trans also:

Thanks everyone for the ideas. The US Gear looks to be the right idea. Not looking to do any thing soon but always looking to expand the horizons.

I'm really happy with my US Gear. It can be left in high all the time, or low range or you can "split shift" to keep the RPM exactly where you want it. even use it in 4By or reverse.
Gear Vendor won't do that.

lespeggy - welcome to FTE!!

I'm glad Barney chimed in, since he has what you're looking for. I'd say that if you're going to do it, do it ASAP. You may not ever recoup the cost of the unit through fuel savings, but the sooner you start, the better.

Barney - what part of the country are you in now?

I would listen to Barney, the man travels all over the country and over every mountain range you can think of with a very large 5 wheel trailer.

Barney is your truck an auto or manual? Has anyone used the US Gear in a manual transmission and how do you like it. I am planning to install one shortly and was going to go with a gear vendors. After checking out US gear I am re-thinking this idea. I like the idea of being able to use it in 4X4 and reverse. Barney it sounds like you have a lot of experence with both types. I am in British Columbia on the coast and we have nothing but mountains to travel here. I have a 95 F350 4X4, 7.3 PSD ZF5
