its not really that simple of a thing to diag. now if it just head gaskets thats not bad to diag. but to correctly diag headgaskets requires a good egr cooler and oil cooler.

The price for the whole job, egr cooler, oil cooler and head gaskets will its around 25-30 hours labor(depeneds on the shop and the truck) + parts. If the heads are good that will save you $3200 in parts (1600 ea) figure 2000 in parts with both coolers.

When this comes up cp I will always give the customer the option of doing it all at one time. not to cheat someone but because they will save about 1500 in labor on the total job going in once not twice.

Cheezit,

are the new parts that the dealership will put on reliable or should I think aftermarket? I would love to do it all at once while it is all apart, but i also want to put it back together right when it does go back together, I am not trying to be a tight *** here, but I dont want to go crazy with part money if stock is good enough to last me several hundereds of thousands of miles. My truck is a work truck, I tow nothing with it, I haul crossover subs in the back for my job as an oilfield contractor, I just want it to last me, they are too expensive to buy every five or six years, I want this one to last me

there is an aftermarket screen for under the oil cooler that is a steel mesh, I would think that is a better part, head studs would be an upgrade as well.
oem gaskets are hard to beat. the oil cooler I have not seen an aftermarket one. there is also a aftermarket egr cooler if your so inclined to keep it there that looks good but I have not tried any of the parts myself. I deal mainly will 99% stock fleet trucks.
I think if you are after what upgrades are worth the money Tex and a few others are the one to look to for advise

I'm through that pretty often. Sometimes moreso then others, but it averages out to 2 or 3 times a month.

Once you get me started talking about aftermarket parts, you can't get me to shut up(atleast not by asking nicely). It's a sickness really, I'm seeking help for it(honest).

Well Men,

Its like this, Got the estimate back from the Dealership today, $4200.00 in labor to put in studs and egr delete, plus all the parts!!!! I told them to **** off and got my truck, brought it to the house and made a few phone calls, Got it going to a local Diesel shop (Advanced Diesel Technologies; Arthurdale, WV) The tech there is going to put ARP Studs in it, a Liberator Egr cooler delete, and a new ford oil cooler all for $1600 plus parts, I cant believe the nerve of the dealership to even try to tell me that job cost that much money in labor alone, plus the markup on parts was ridiculous, just the ARP Studs alone, they were going to charge me $509 a head for the studs, ARP itself cansend the stud kit for both heads for $580.00 What has the world come to, we already pay so much for our trucks, and then for ford to do that to the working man, charging him out the *** for work, So if anyone of you are ever (god-forbid) broke down in the southern PA, northern WV area, stay away from POINT MARION FORD!!!

I know some of you are Technicians, and I know it is not completly your fault, but how would a normal person pay for that service? even if I just wanted it back to stock, the 4200 was just labor to get to the heads!! Plus they dont even know what is wrong, Shawn Liberator from Liberator Diesel told me what was wrong over the phone!

are shop would be 2500-3000k for labor depending on what the truck had as far as lift, bumbers, other itmes like pto, wench etc.
keep in mind we are at $100 an hour. you could haggle down to $85 most likly and10% off parts to keep the job at the shop so figure 2125-2500 at dicounted rates.
$4200 is to much and im saying that as a dealer tech.

One of the big reasons Im here to help is I know how much this stuff cost. Its nothing for me to go give an advisor a 4-5k estimate for repair. I know how hard I work for my money and still have no idea how people afford to pay for repairs.

the other reason is to help the rep of dealerships. To help show what you should get expect from a dealer tech and a dealership. sadly so many shops dont help my case.

Well I appreciate all of your help and inputs, I have never had a bad taste in my mouth about dealerships until today, and if it were not for the posts and help I have recieved from this forum I would have paid that no questions asked, Its sad really, I used to fix all my own stuff when i drove my 95 5.0L F150, but things are so different when you lok under the hood of these trucks its down right scary.. oh well
