i am getting a code 84 from the koeo and koer tests. code 84 is EGR vacuum control solenoid failure. i disconnected the wiring harness from the ecm and did a continuity check on that particular wire from the solenoid back to the ecm and the continuity check passes. i know the solenoid is good. i have checked it and all checks pass on it. my question is this, if the solenoid check is good and the continuity check is good back thru the wiring harness to the ecm, is that indicative of a damaged ecm?
this code also causes a code 33 on the koer tests, EGR not opening.
i know that the prior owner for some reason bared the wires back on the wire connector to the vacuum solenoid, twisted it so that the wires were continually shorted against each other. it has run that way for years i would guess. i am now working thru problems and trying to fix them.
If they were shorted together, there's a good chance that the control circuit in the computer has failed. The computer needs the resistance of the solenoid to knock down the amperage enough to not burn up the circuit.
i can't get it to clear out. i've disconnected the battery numerous times. the only code showing is the 84 on the koeo, and 33 and 84 on the koer. 33 because the solenoid is not being operated to open the egr valve.

that was my thought also. hope springs eternal though. guess it's off to the auto parts store.
alright, this is an update to my problem and a light at the end of the tunnel for me. the new computer came in this afternoon. neither cardone's web site nor any of the auto parts web sites posted the id code for the 78-4446. description just said for an '87 f-150 with auto transmission and a 5.0 liter engine. anyway, the code on the new computer was the same as the code from the old computer that i took out (E7TF-12A650-AU1A) in case anybody else needs to know. i have no codes on the koeo tests now and the koer tests shows a code 41 now which is the HEGO sensor. the egr and evr codes are gone and i visually witnessed it lifting the egr valve and closing it on the koer test. now the code 41 is something else for me to figure out. i just put a brand new HEGO sensor on it saturday. maybe a few days of operation is what the system needs so the new computer can learn. hopefully the code 41 will clear up all by itself as the system builds up the KAM. keeping my fingers crossed and to the ones that replied, thanks a bunch.
skin oil on the new sensor will give that code for a while, takes a bit to burn it off. kinda like changing halogen bulbs, except they fail from the oil from your skin getting on them

isn't it a little hot to be touching with the fingers to leave skin oil?
thanks! i am ready to give it a day or 2 and then try it again to give the new ecm time to learn.
