Can a limited slip diff lock up?

I was pulling around a drive thru today at lunch and turning left fairly hard and noticed the truck didn't want to move forward as well. I then noticed when I gave it more gas that the back left tire was hopping like a locker would in that situation. Once I began going straight it was fine. After that I went slowly to see if I could get it to do it again and nothing, everything seems fine. On the way home I tried to get it to do it again and it wouldn't. I stomped on it a couple of times and the diff was working fine, started fish-tailing. Is it possible the spider gears binded some and then worked free? I thought about taking it to the dealership but if I can't get it to do it again I don't think they're going to do much but would like to know if there's something I need to worry about it.

it is not uncommon for a limited slip to lock up when you are making a tight turn at low speeds. the way it works is if the tire on one side is going slower than the other the clutch pack should lock up the rear end and then unlock once the wheels begin to spin at the same speed.

I've never had this happen on any of the previous vehicles I've owned with limited slip diffs. I thought that was the point of a limited slip so it doesn't do this, but rather remain open until there is actual wheel slippage, otherwise you might as well just have a locker right?

the new rear ends are built diffrent than the ones past. I also heard of the issues with these rears and their clutch packs.

The clutch packs seem to be a lot tighter than in the past on F150's. SD's still seem to be looser than the F150's. I personally like them tighter. We worked to get them this tight on the drag car.

That's interesting to know. I'll keep an eye on it. It hasn't done it again since.

i'd rather have them more loose... really eats up turning radius.. and tires

this should only happen when making tight turns at low speeds. It is addressed in your owners manual as well. Lockers lock up more frequently and easier than a LS, I personally like the lockers, a little more tire ware but added traction. the only issuse is you are more likely to fishtail with a locked rear end, big issue in rain especially in trucks due to the weight distribution.

I haven't had any issues in rain with the F150 limited slip, but snow can be tricky until you get the throttle management under control. It takes a little getting used to with the drive by wire because it's a little different.
