351W'w were all 28oz..........they never changed.

302's were also 28oz until 1981, then went to 50oz.

Regarding the bolts in the old block, you're actually pretty fortunate with those ones (as fortunate as it gets with shorn bolts anyway ) because they've broken above the surface of the block........& are in cast iron, not steel.

Heat the bolts & surrounding area to dull red without melting, then hold them at that temp for a minute or so, & let them cool completely (important).

The longer one will most likely come out easily with vice grips at this point; the short one will probably need the bolt end grinding clean, slip an 1/8" bigger nut over it, & weld it on.
If you have a mig it will be easier because slag won't be a problem, but a small electrode is OK.

Again let it cool right down, then gently rock it back & forth with a wrench & very small movements, slowly increasing the movement. If the nut breaks off don't worry, just weld another one on.
You might need to build the end of the bolt up slowly before welding the nut on; but try to only weld to the bolt, not the block as well.

Take your time & it will work.

Looking good. But, you are planning to leave it in that state a bit given the taped-up openings?

Thanks. I plan on painting the engine black tomorrow, so I started taping some of it up. Still need to install the oil pan. Then i'll have to wait until next weekend to continue work on it.

For paint i'll be using POR 15's black engine enamel, I love having the option of spray or brush.

Question; Is there a difference between the 80's 351w oil pan, and the 87-90's oil pan? I'm thinking the dip stick was changed after 87.

Edit: There is in fact a difference, my original's dip stick goes through the oil pan. 87+ dip stick goes in through the timing chain cover.

Speaking of timing chain cover... Wife wasn't to happy I had it in the dish washer :P no more grease and gunk though. Going to scuff it up degrease and paint it up.

Today I purchased a brand new water pump for the engine. Will be painting it this weekend, also have a one piece Ford racing oil pan gasket on order. Wish I could work on this thing more, but work and school full time leave me limited.

Don't add a wife and kid! Lol. Luckily school is out for the summer for me. Glad to see you're making good progress. Keep it up!

Funny you should say that... my wife is pregnant and due in August. I should get out of school early tomorrow night, which will give me some more time to work.

Haha, oh boy! I actually had to sell my 86 that I did a bunch of work to because of the wife and kid. Loved that truck.

Thanks Gary. It took ALOT of coats in order to get it to look decent. And for the cost and time, I think i'd go with rattle can next time.
