Thx.

Make sure they give you a starter for the engine that you have. I don't know if there is a diffrence in the starters between the Romeo or any other engine but there are differences elsewhere in the engines and some critical parts do not interchange.

Next time save yourself some headache and test it before installing that third bolt.

Returned to AutoZone and asked about engine-specific concerns. No info or reference to any such issues on any starters they had for my truck. Did pick up the shim- just in case.

Removed "new" (rebuilt) starter - appearance-wise, it's an identical match. BUT - the starter shaft hadn't withdrawn back into the housing after the engine started, leaving it and the attached gear protruding - and obviously engaging the flywheel with engine running. Retracted when I pushed it down (a little late!)

No obvious marks on starter gear or flywheel that I could see. To see if flywheel itself may have been the cause of noise (or now damaged) - I reinstalled the original starter (minus corroded el connection). Fired right up - no more screeching noise. Seems to me I got a bad replacement starter, and will be returning it tomorrow.

Given this - would you recommend against getting another rebuilt and pay the xtra $ for a new one? (not one to spend unnecessarily, but also don't want to get burned twice). I realize there's no guarantees anywhere, but welcome thoughts on better odds of a working part being new?

Yep - great suggestion - put original one back in with only 2.

Use your original starter and if it ever, goes bad take it to a local starter/alternator rebuilder. That way you will have the rebuilder to talk to, not a vendor. Just glad you didn't give up the original starter as a core then you would be stuck with whatever.
