Parking brake problems

Howdy all, I have a some trouble with my parking brake, first off, the cables were pretty much froze in the tube they run through. Those are being replaced, but the petal won't stay down either. The catch is broke or something like that. What do I need to do to fix it? Will I have to replace the whole petal etc?

Or should I just forget about it and get myself a cement brick to weigh it down with?

I could be the pawl that locks the pedal in place is frozen in the "release" position. If it is, spray it with a good penetrating oil and work it back and forth untill its free.

Well, I'm finally getting back to the parking brake, its got new cables now but the pawl still isn't catching, it got several large sprays of WD40 over several days, but still nothing. I've looked around for a new pawl, and neither LMC Bronco Graveyard or NAPA has anything. Will I just have to go to a junkyard and get a new petal assembly?

1973/75 is different than 1976/79.
D3TZ2780A .. Parking Brake Control Assy / Obsolete

Fits: 1973/75 F100/350.

D6TZ2780A .. Parking Brake Control Assy / Obsolete

Fits: 1976/79 F100/350 // 1978/79 Bronco.

No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has either one.
-----------------------------------------------------
Since Ford supplied the parking brake control as an assembly only, there were no individual parts available for it, except for the release handle and the pedal pad.

Inside the control, there's a curly Q spring on the pawl (ratchet). Since the pawl won't hold, this spring is prolly broken. This is/was a very common problem.

Ok, thank you! I pulled it off and from what I could see, its internals are pretty rusty, I can't imagine that the spring in there is still intact, so it looks like I need to find a new petal assembly. You said that they changed the petal assembly in 76, but is there any chance that an earlier assembly (from a 67-72) might work?

Thanks

Different:

DOTZ2780A replaced C8TZ2780B .. Parking Brake Control Assy-Foot Operated / Obsolete

Fits: 1967/72 F100/350.

Since there's no Ford part number for that fracatta curly Q spring, I dunno how many years Ford used the same one.

Prior to 1967, the pawl and spring were available by themselves, but these parking brake control's are not foot operated.

WD-40 won't dissolve rust worth a damn.

Get a REAL penetrating oil, like PB Blaster, Kroil, etc.

I think (but, wont swear to it) that the same spring is used in any of the pedal operated emergency brakes. Used one off a 68 LTD in a 75 F250.

The problem is...this spring wasn't available either.

The only spring I could find for a foot operated parking brake control (cars/trucks thru 1979) is the following, and I do not know whether it will work in anything else.

D1DZ2788A .. Parking Brake Ratchet Locking Spring / Obsolete / Fits: 1971/77 Maverick/Comet.

MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has ONE = 800-546-7278.

"High Buck" BOB ALLEN FORD in Overland Park KS has ONE = 800-676-0675.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 26 = 800-543-4959.

No other Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any.

Thanks for the info! 73-75s are pretty hard to find in junkyards over here, so I'll have to keep my eyes open for one. But, there's something else I was thinking, could I rig up a hand operated parking brake in the same spot as the foot petal? Here's a pic of what I'm thinking of, (picture from a truck on ebay) you can see the handle in the lower left hand corner. http://i.ebayimg.com/10/!!fuEI%28!!2E~$%28KGrHqUH-DkEttFPlWZWBLhDoOl%283w~~_4.JPG

Would I only be asking for trouble trying to rig up something like that?

You might be able to do this, but the front parking brake cable may be affected.

It might end up too short...or too long.

I'd look around for a 1960's/70's passenger car, get the control from that, since GLR said he used the spring from a 1968 LTD in his 1975 F250.

btw: You might contact FTE member camperspecial65 (posts in the 61/66 forum).

He might know where there's some 1973/75's in wrecking yards. He scrounges all the local yards and lives in Olympia.

Yeah, I might go with that too, it depends on what I find when I go to the junkyard. I must admit though, I really like the hand brake idea, it just seems like a good set-up on a truck. And thanks again for all your help, I appreciate it.

Well, I finally got a new parking brake set up, I found a hand brake that mounts under the dash to the left of the column. I pulled it off a 67 F250 4x4 in the local yard. its a pretty neat set up, but it has no ratchet mechanism in it. Since I'll be swapping in an np435 I might see if I can get a trans mounted e-brake off of a big truck, it might work better. It certainly is a big improvement over the foot petal.
