This is an issue that I will take care of in the spring, but the issue is on my driver side door the power lock/unlock button only works when the door is closed, and the actuator for the driver side hasn't worked in years, but I just press it down and it works just fine. So any ideas why the locks only work when the door is closed?
Sounds like the wiring has broken in the boot between the door and the body. This is pretty common, as wiring passing through that area get moved a lot. So I would trace the wires from the switch to the boot to the body, and maybe use a jumper between the switch and where the wires connect inside the body, and bypass wires until the switch starts working.
The actuator may have a similar issue, or it can be completely rusted due to water getting into the motor. Try the above procedure with the wires first, then check the actuator motor itself. Pull its connector and apply 12 volts directly to its terminals to see if the motor still works. If so, then it's definitely wiring. If not, you will have to replace it. This will require drilling out an aluminum rivet on the rear edge of the door to remove the assembly, and then using a short 1/4-20 bolt to hold it in place again.
