who makes one and has anyone had experience with them? i think my alternator might be seeing its last days and since i have so many electrical accessories i think its time for an optima im not sure if i wanna get a red top for the cranking amps or the yellow for cycling also is there any way to differentiate a regular alternator for a high output? in case i were to stumble apon one at the junk yard or such?
i would definatle go with the yellow top, much better battery. i have a 130 amp in my truck. forgot what the part number is but got it from carquest. so dont get one there as i have had problems with it. i think it came off something with a police package. i would just find someplace around you that rebuilds them and have it rewound for higher amperage. if this one takes a crap again thats what im going to do.
Look for articles on the 3G swap to see what's involved in updating your charging system to handle the additional amperage.
You will need to shim the V-belt pulley, helicoil the tensioning ear and straighten the adjuster bracket a bit to get it to line up.
I bought a NIB Motorcraft alternator for a Taurus off Ebay for around $75.(no core, no shipping)
The 8 1/4" pivot allowed me to use the same belts.
Not sure about the '86 instrument clusters but I've heard that the ammeter wiring can't handle the current.
