advice needed: alternator output

Is there a way of testing, while it is in the truck, what the output is from an alternator? I've got an '87 F250 with the 300 engine. I don't think the alternator is stock, and I would like to find out what its output is as I'm adding on some accessories. I don't want to go to the expense of a higher output alternator if the one in the truck will do the job. Any help you can give will be appreciated.

You can check voltage, but not amperage without a special tester.
Take it to an auto parts store as they usually test charging systems for free.

Why cant you put an amp gauge between the alt output and battery. Remeber amp gauges have to wired in series they cannot parralel the circuit. Also some alternators have the amperage rating on them it is stamped in the case.
