I need to replace the flywheel/flexplate between
the 302 and C4 on my 1977 F100. What info do I need to I.D./ask for a suitable replacement? (casting number?) And where can I find this info?
Also, if anyone knows a good place to get this
flywheel...I appreciate it if you told me about
it.
Trail_rider is correct! I'd check with the local parts house first on new then compare it with what the salvage yard is asking.
I personally prefer new when it comes to internal parts. )
You need to get a flexplate that is right diameter for your bellhousing. Count the teeth on the ringgear. Your flexplate needs the 28oz counterweight for pre 81 302's. 351W,351C use the same counterweighting (I used a flexplate from a 351C with my 302/C6) Definitely don't use a flexplate from a 300,360,390. I'm not sure about 351M,400, or 460. In 1981 302's (5.0L) went to a 50oz counterweight. 351W (5.8L) stayed 28oz till they were discontinued. Your truck bellhousing is probably bigger than say a car like a Mustang II or Granada or such that might have had a C4. I got a Mustang flywheel (when I was going to keep my old 3sp) that I couldn't use because is was a smaller diameter with fewer teeth on the ring gear. The starter wouldn't have been able to engage the ringgear in the truck bellhousing. If you peruse the ads in Superford, or Mustangs and Fords, or such you probably can find vendors for Ford flexplate needs. Ford Racing Performance (formerly Motorsport) probably sells them. I know my local speed shop can order new ones. What's wrong with the one you have? Is it cracked?
