Power steering pump pulley

Are they supposed to be single groove, or double groove?

Mine's a single groove and I don't know how the other guy got it so far down the power steering pump shaft. It was almost touching the pump housing. It took forever to pull that thing off in such a tight spot w/ two wrenches. Then when I installed it, I followed the directions and flushed it with the end of the pump's shaft.

Well that's a relief. The diagram on Autozone's website shows a double.

Here's mine down low right. Single groove, one belt.

That's a clean motor! Did Ford switch to a plastic master cylinder in '87?

I believe so. 87 was one of them years some things switched for example glowplug system yet it came with a 6.9 and c-6 instead of the 7.3 and E4OD. I think I'm better off though.

It can be either or - single-groove is for trucks with A/C, double is for trucks that have no A/C from the factory, the latter use two belts to drive the PS pump - not that it needs them, but the idea is to have three belts together driving the water pump, so when the A/C ain't there you gotta find something else to run a belt to. I've seen trucks with a double-V pulley that have only one belt driving the PS pump, it's similar to the factory double-belt setup but the belt that rides in the middle grooves of the crank and WP pulleys is moved over to the passenger side of the engine where it drives the vacuum pump alone, in those cases there's no short belt between the alternator and the vacuum pump. Oddly enough I saw that setup a few weeks after Icame up with it on my own and converter my truck to it - since both the vacuum pump and the PS pump line up with the middle grooves of the crank and WP pulleys, and I only have a single-groove pulley on the PS pump, I had to space one of the two 3/4" forward - I chose the PS pump as it's held to the engine by more and larger bolts, and so far it's been a few thousand miles on that arrangement and everything works great.

Just curious, where do people get a vacuum and steering pump pulley for the older trucks like my 85?

I wonder why I can't just walk into kragen, etc. to get them.

I am definately going to get the right tools for this truck, but both look like somebody tried to pry them apart with a hammer and are visibily bent, and they wobble like crazy.

junkyard would be the cheapest source, obviously, but I'm sure you can get them from a dealership as well. IIRC the PS pump pulley is the same as the one used in about every other Ford vehicle of those model years, so that makes your job a bit easier.

Although it has been a while, Advance Auto used to be able to get them.
They probably won't have one in stock, but next day or second day is about normal.
