Just want to get some opions on a remanufactured engine by Autozone. It's calleda SERIES II ENGINE. It cost $1500 and has a 2 yrs unlimted mileage warranty. The block is bored to no more than .040" over and it comes with valve covers, timing cover and oil pan. It also comes with a set of Bosch Platinum spark plugs aleady installed. Aand one more thing, all internal components are new. any Autozone has a pamplet with more info on them that I couldn't list. Thanks again.........Lew
Lew, Autozone (and others) have had trouble with their remanufactured engines. The quality was very poor, and gettting an engine to outlast the warranty meant you got a really good deal. If you buy the remanufactured engine, get the best warranty they offer.
Personally, I'd either buy a brand new one from Ford, go to one of the many businesses that offer nothing but rebuilds, or have your old one rebuilft by a qualified mechanic. I think you'd be much happier going this route. Some of the listmembers have had trouble with reman engines, so be carefull.
I also agree with Stockman and 390, you should be able to get a both a better deal and better quality out of a local rebuilder for the same money. If downtime is a problem you might consider getting a bad engine from a junkyard and having it rebuilt, I picked one up once for $50.00
I have an 89 bronco with a factory long block in it. The price at the time(1993) was about
$1200. I have at least 200000 on it now and it's still crusing. In fact it burns less oil now than the original did when I bought it. Check with a local ford parts man that you trust(if you know any) they may have something.
Wayne, Was your engine a Ford factory rebuild or was it a new engine? Just curious. I may be in the market for an engine also. I installed a Ford factory rebuild engine in a truck years ago but didn't keep it long enough to see how long the engine would last.
Yes,it was a rebuilt. I have a couple of friends in different dealerships who have been around ford parts for quite some time. They told me that ford had some problems with their rebuilders previously but said that that problem had been solved. I'm not sure if both dealerships get their engines from the same source so I would check with someone you trust(if any!) at a ford dealership. If you either have or know someone who has an account at a dealership you can buy there almost as low and sometimes better than you can elsewhere. I read an article in Super Ford mag some time back where someone was building 5.0s with new blocks(I think Cobra) and all new parts, with your choice of cam for about $1800. The article said he had enough to last for about a year. That might be worth some research. I have had another 5.0 rebuilt by a friend and that one had some problems. The truck that it came from had been hit and apparently the block was warped and the crank ran out of true. It still seemed to perform ok but there was an awfull squeal(like a fan Belt). He fixed it for me and now it runs great. He said that this problem is quite common so attention to where the block comes from is very important. He also said 302 blocks are still quite common and not overly expensive. I would look for one that will take no more than .30 over, that way you can do it again 200000 miles later. Hope this helps.
Hey,
Go to this website for a cheap 302 block. Enginecore.com. It's a site that generaly has quite a few 302 blocks already rebuilt or ones that need to be rebuilt for cheap. Once you go to that site, you'll have to register. After that, go to market and search what you're looking for. For example, a lady was selling a complete crate 390(where she got it from, I don't know) with zero miles for $600. I didn't check into it(sounds too good to be true), but there was quite a few 302 short and longblocks up for sale. Doesn't hurt to at least check it out. I agree with everyone else about the reman. engines from local parts dealers. Too big of a risk. Good luck with your project.
Checker/Kragen/Shucks has started a performer series of rebuilt engines with a 3 year warranty plus a roadside assistance program that you might want to look into. These also have better boring specs plus new parts inside, especially the camshaft.
This rebuilding issue is really a mess to me. New Ford engines seem overpriced especially compared to you-know-what. I have not read anything sterling about Ford's remanufacturing program since they started to farm it out to contractors. My first 302 rebuild stumbled when I found out they recycled the oil pump driveshafts - how cheap can you get with a $1500 rebuild? I still had to put the top end together myself which took me way too long to do. The top rear oil gallery plug was left out which I didn't discover until I turned the motor over. By the time I got it all together again, my warranty had expired. I am not use what I will do with the next engine which is needed soon.
