I have a 71 F-100 pickup. It has a 302 in it now. I want more power. Do anyone know what kind of transmission I would need for a 360 and or a 390 engine? Are those good engines? Thank you in advance. Larry...........
Larry go to a 351 and you can swap engines, go to the FE and you will have to change transmissions, mounts, driveshaft etc. The 351 would be a lot easier.
If you do change engines the 390 would be just slightly better than the 360 as far as tourque. the transmission could range from a standard to a C6 but you will have to find one with the correct bellhousing, they arent all the same belive me I have been there.
Converting to another engine is a major pain and a lot of work. I just converted a 71 F-350 from a 390 to a 400M and the memories are still fresh.
To get more torque and power you should convert to a 351W. The 302 and 351 bell housing bolt patterns are identical, as are the motor mounts. You can even use your existing transmission, or change it to an overdrive unit. The only changes you would need to make are the exhaust manifolds and maybe the throttle linkage. As easy a conversion as they come.
If you want more power and torque than a 351W offers then get a stroker kit for the 351. Last I heard, Coast High Performance in California has many different stroker kits for the 351W. You can go as large as 427 CI. That, with some good aluminum heads and a health cam, will make yours one of the strongest trucks around and still get you respectable mileage. The conversion kits aren't cheap.
Save your money and time and do the easiest conversion possible. If you convert to an AOD or 5-speed trans then you will need to shorten your drive line because these tranys are 1" to 2" longer than the C4 or 4-speed they replace.
i have nothing but the "fe" engines in my stable, and yes the torque is great, however if i owned a factory small block truck, i would find a solution that kept the small block in the truck. your going to find many more engine/transmisson options. the engine swap to a "fe" would take a tremendous effort. you will have to consider changing everything from the radiator to the differential yoke.
for what its worth, i allways thought the 302 was a much better engine than the 351w.
