Rear End Slop

When reaching a cruising speed in 3rd gear or OD (I have the manual 3sp+OD in my 79 302 2wd F150) I get a hesitation that I don't think is the motor. When under the truck I can rotate the driveline (one piece) against the rear end (9inch-2.75) I'm guessing say from 12:00-12:03 (on a clock?) I'm thinking this is too much backlash and with such a high gear ratio, that the slop is transmitting back to the engine making it seem like it's hesitating. It runs smooth while accelerating. The U-joints don't look to be the problem. If I indeed have too much backlash in my rear end, I have a 3:50 in my 76 F100 that probably has less backlash. The engine and tranny from the 79 are probably destined for there anyway. For the near term I am going to drive the 79 while I fix some problems w/ the right kingpin in the 76 and reassemble the clutch pedal that I removed from the 76 when I converted it to auto. I also think I need to cut the tranny tunnel in the 76. The 76 used to have a 3sp manual but the tranny tunnel has no access panel like the 79 (and my 69 w/ 4sp) have. The 3sp+OD (does this tranny have a name?) seems to have a tall cover like the T18 in my 69. I notice a ton of vibration when reaching 75+mph. Again, driveline/rearend?
