How bad a problem is it to remove the passenger side cylinder head? I have a son that has two broken exhaust manifold bolts on the rear cylinder of the pass side head (#4). any ideas on removing them without removing the cylinder head? It is on a 99 f150 5.4 4x4 power everything. Looks like it might be a bears ****. suspect might break a few more when we try to take it off, but then it would be a good time to put on a set of headers. thanks for your help.
You don't have to remove the cylinder head to remove the exhaust manifold to replace the studs/bolts/nuts. They are a bugger to get to but imo it would be easier to leave the head on and attack this job from the underside, and the side through the wheel well.
I agree, remove the inner fender liner (6 or 7 screws), jack up the front of the truck until the suspension droops, then jack stands under the frame.
Go to Sears and buy their stud remover kit, it has several size stud removers. One will work perfectly as long as there is some stud protruding from the head.
You have to remove the exhaust manifold first. Use a tap to chase the threads in the head, 8 x 1.25MM tap, use lots of WD-40 to hose out the holes.
Buy new studs & nuts from Ford.
If the manifold is cracked, NAPA sells new ones for about $145, comes with the gasket. Also other places have them for even less. Ford asks about $350 for them.
Oh, and if you are worried about breaking other ones, prior to doing the job douse every stud with penetrating oil, i'm saying every day for a weak before, when it's hot when it's cold if you wake up in the middle of the night to tinkle go spray em.
