im 15 and i picked up my first project a 86 f250 2x4 with 460 and a 5spd. my grandpa bought her new in 87 drove her until 2005 and gave it to my uncle who used it his farm and thats where things went down hill. workers thrashed on it until 2008 when the poor old girl gave out. they parked it in the barn where it still sits. long story short she's mine now. i picked up a pile of 460 parts on craigslist for 25 bucks. starting this weekend me and my cousin are gonna start puting the moter out and put it back together. just thought id share the build will post pics next time i go out to the farm where she's parked. this truck is no ordinary truck it was my grandpa's favorite truck he died 2 months after getting rid of her. so my mission is to get her going again and make her my first truck. any input or ideas is great thanks!
Welcome! They sure are fun to work on sometimes. Not so much so when the wife wants other things done. Wish I was 15 again with a nice truck... Looking forward to seeing the pics.
We get many many posts for the fuel systems on these trucks. Most of the 460's had dual tanks with electric fuel pumps in the tanks. And the pumps were controlled by a relay and a oil pressure switch. One little thing going wrong in this system and it will not get any fuel. So keep that in mind when you get to the point of getting it running, and keep an eye out for the famous oil pressure switch. You will have two sensors in the oil system on the engine, the one for the dash gauge and the one for the fuel system.
I was planing on opening a new topic on exactly how to switch over to a mechanical fuel pump, but its mid winter here and no plans to do this until spring. The whole switch over should cost under $100 maybe under $50.
Welcome 86460boy!
That's a great story and a great reason to bring her back to life.
I would do all you can to evaluate what's gone wrong before you go tearing it apart.
thanks everybody. already got a dana 44 rear end with lower gears and a locker gonna throw in the back. will keep all that in mind! will post pics on saturday.

That's sad about your grandpa, I'm sorry to here that. I don't mean to hijack, but this reminds me of how my own grandpa might end up giving me his truck, because he's just getting too old to drive, can't see too well, can't hardly hear, government wants to take his liscence away.
But as far as your truck goes, it sounds like a cool project and a nice truck. I think though, that before you just tear in to it and start throwing money at it for parts you don't nescisarrilly (yeah it ain't spelled right, I know) need, I would find out what's wrong with it, what needs to be done to it, and what it does need.
Your F250 would have came stock with a Sterling 10.25 inch rear axle, which is a very heavy duty rear end, and if nothing is wrong with it, I would leave it in there for now. Right now, focus on getting the truck running and driving, and then get a locker and lower gears later. If that really is a dana 44 you have, and you want to put it in the truck, it won't fit, for one thing, and secondly, it will be way too light duty for a big ol' heavy hauler like your F250.
Keep us posted and remember, find out what, if anything, is keeping it from running and driving properly first, and then worry about other stuff later.
a dana 44 is to small? damn i have one sitting behind my shop with a locker and lower gears already in it. owe well save it for another project. ya im picking up a whole 460 in pieces that im buying. me and my mechanic buddy gonna go get the truck tomorrow and put it in his shop, gonna get this bad boy going again. so probably get some pics tomorrow. this truck is red with a white head ache rack damn it looks good for something that been outside all of its life.
Once you get the truck there and eyeball the dana 44, you will see there is a big difference in size. Also your f250 will have a 8 lug wheel pattern. You are now playing with a heavier duty truck.
