there is a story but it not mine.

way back when my dad was a punk *** kid he used to "borrow" gas from an old farmer out in the sticks that had his own pump on his property. eventually the farmer caught on and decided to fill his pump with diesel. so one night dad is out with some girls and a buddy trying to cruise and get a little action, had cash for party favors just not fuel, so he goes to "borrow" some. about a block from the pump he said it started to knock like hell and make the biggest trail of white smoke he has ever seen in his life. i guess it still ran, it just ran like complete ****.

EDIT: check my new thread and help me with an answer

we did that 35 years ago on a woods basher we built.

62 ford town and country wagon, body removed, and frame shortened 6 ft. full cage, steel diamond plate floor boards.
it started life with a 312 and 3 speed, and welded spiders in the ford 9 inch. ended life with a sbc 400 and turbo 400 trans.

hey tom, how many gallons you figure a keg holds? i'm seriously considering this for the bronc as my tank and sending unit are fubared. were their any down sides to using it as a gas tank?

you can only get 15 gallon half keg or the 7 gallon quarter kegs these days. back when we did that rig 30 gallon full kegs were available too.
the only draw back to using a keg is they are made of food grade stainless steel. so welding taps and fill tubes to them without leaks is tricky unless you know how to weld.
then you will need to figure out how to mount it.
that one had pedestals welded to the sides/bottom of the tank, and we used the side fill bung as a filler port. another thing that todays kegs do not have.

it looks to be "tapped" with a fuel line in place already, as well as a filler on the top. i'm sure i could figure a mount setup once i had it and could get dimensions. and on the off chance that it does need welding my dad could probably do it at work, and hey guess what? he can weld his **** off, and just happens to weld food grade stainless on a regular basis

WOOOOOOWOOOOOOOO!!!! keg cell ftw!!!!
(you didn't look at the ad, did you tom?)

That's a hell of a way to get $100 out of an old keg. Attach a hose and sell it to Dan as a fuel cell.

Hey Dan, I think I've got some "fuel cells" laying around.

around here kegs have a $50 deposit iirc, add to that tapping a fuel line fitting and welding a filler neck on and that $100 doesn't sound so high to me any more because i bet a shop would charge way more than $50 to weld up the filler neck. like i said, i could get my dad to weld it for me at work, but it is a pain to get him to go along with stuff like that. cheapest fuel cells i'm finding are $100+ and then i have to buy fittings, straps, and whatever the hell "foams" are for them.

Whatever happened to your fuel tank? I thought you cleaned it and used tank restoration crap in it or whatever? Or am I thinking of someone else entirely?

Only real downside I could think of, besides possible leaking from redneck fab-
You won't have a sending unit, therefore no gas gauge.
That's something that I prefer to have lol.

One of the tanks on my F350 doesn't have a working gauge, and I effin hate it.

i'm alright with no gauge, done it before, it does suck, but once you know what kind of mileage you get it works out for the most part, and i generally fill up before i go anywhere.

it was me who fixed a tank, but after i let the insides dry, another pound of rust settled to the bottom of the tank so its a lost cause. the sending unit is fubared, i did get this stuff all in "functional shape" but why bother with it, its just going to fail again soon anyways.

i'd like to have a fuel gauge, but i'm trying to weigh my options on how to do this the cheapest way possible, so i'm willing to make cuts here and there on things that aren't so "essential" to a wheeler. i'm aiming for 40's so its not like i'll be daily driving this pig.

We used to mount those keg-tanks by making some "Straps" out of cable & turnbuckles --- the side of the keg where the handle are - we would strap through the handles so it wouldn't "rotate" when bouncing off-road.. No welding - hardware store stuff...
