I am looking to replace failed 5r55e transmission in my 1998 ranger. I am getting conflicting information on which model year transmissions I can use in my truck. Some sources say only 1998 through 2000 will work, because of the sensor/connector differences. Other sources say any 1998 through 2007 will work.
Could anybody clarify this for me.
The 5R55E is the same for '98-'00. What changes in '01 is that another speed sensor is added, an "Intermediate Shaft Speed" (ISS) Sensor.
The ISS is a magnetic pickup that sends planetary sun gear speed information to the powertrain control module (PCM). The ISS is mounted externally on the center of the case. The PCM uses the ISS information to aid in determining pressure requirements. See: vmtp.com
That's the distinction. Now as to whether the '01+ 5R55E w/additional ISS sensor will work on your '98, I can't tell you that for certain. It could very well be that, since the '98 PCM is already programmed not to recognize any such ISS sensor, then there's no need to bother worrying about hooking it up should you find one mounted on the replacement unit.

Thanks for the info!
Based on the website data the difference is ISS sensor used by newer PCM to fine-tune the transmission operation. Seems like there is a good chance 2001+ transmission will work in my truck given my older PCM doesn’t take input from ISS anyway. I would much rather install newer transmission. More of them available with fewer miles. Could anybody confirm whether or not this will work? I am sure others ran into this issue before!
I talked to Ford technician who specializes in 4x4 transmission. He believes that 2001+ 5r55e should work just fine in my Ranger with ISS sensor left disconnected. I think I will take plunge and try it out!
