the brake pedal will not release; pushed on it, pulled the release lever; pushed on it, pulled the lever. Finally the pedal was to the floor, and really stuck. The truck would not move (from the middle of the street). We tinkered (poked around) with the mechanism, and the brake line finally released, but the pedal is still stuck on the floor, and of course the red brake light appears in the dash panel display, and an alarm periodically sounds while driving. At least, i can move the truck out of the middle of the street.
Does any one have some suggestions?

Hows the e-brake line, still intacted?? It runs along the outside driversside frame rail, check to make sure its not binded up somehow. Could be a number of things from the pedal being bottomed out to the brake cable to the brakes.
Sometimes those pedals chet the bed, I've had to replace them before. (Once for that very scenario) When you see on of these out of the box, it's hard to believe they trust it to hold the kind of loads these trucks are rated for! Anyway, new unit from Ford, and I was underway.
Just to be safe, pull the rear brake rotor and make sure your emergency brakes and components are ok too, might as well check it just to be sure nothing got hung up in there. I noticed when I did emergency brake job on my wifes Expy, rust built up on the inside of her rotor from the elements, rain, snow, exct. and chewed up her brakes, siezed one of them, check it out. At least your brake light comes on when your brake is on... I found out the hard way that mine does not for some reason. I had a friend call me when I was three blocks from his house to tell me that I needed to turn off my parking brake. He could hear the noise it was making from his house, lol....
In my defense, it was the same weekend I put in my new stereo, so I was testing it out and couldn't hear anything.
As said above- new brake assembly. I'd say if the truck would not move when it was engaged, your brake drums themselves are in good working order.
first, remove the PCM, then remove the parking brake handle and release the cable from the handle.
once the PCM is out of the way, you'll have a clear view of the parking brake assembly. There is a lever (this explanation is not very good...sorry) in the back of the assembly, almost to the point where the cable goes through the floor/fire wall. As I pushed the lever up towards the firewall and the top of the dash, the pedal was gently released. I believe that by pushing the lever as far as possible (by hand), will reset the parking brake. i set the parking brake (by hand), and released by the lever (at the back of the assembly, where the parking brake handle cables attaches) several times.
