Can anyone tell me where to find the switch that mounts on the parking brake pedal that turns on the red "brake" warning light in the dash instrument panel? Can an aftermarket generic switch be used? Any tips on how to install? Thanks!
Mark,
Could you explain more thoroughly. What is the "prop valve?" Is the hydro brake system the big round thing that the master cylinder is attached to? Feel free to LOL at my ignorance...Thanks
The "hydro system" is the hydraulic brake system.
The "prop valve" is the proportioning valve. This valve balances the pressure between the front (disc) brakes and the rear (drum) brakes to keep the rears from locking up, disc brakes require more pressure to operate than drums.
It also has a switch built into it to activate the brake failure light on the dash if either the front or rear systems lose pressure. This is the light you're talking about.
That "big round thing" is your vacuum brake booster, you have power brakes.
So what's the relationship between the dash light and the parking break? I've always thought that the dash light just informed me that my parking break was still on. How does the parking break trigger the switch? Thanks!
So, what you're saying is that I'm all wet. The dash light is not a parking break indicator, rather it is a brake system failure warning light and has nothing whatsoever to do with the parking break. Correct? Thus, the parking break is completely manual with no electrical connections at all. Hmmmmmm...
Nope not a parking light indicator. If the brake light is on the proportioning valve is not centered. Check to see if both the front and back brakes are working. Something may be grounded out making the light come on if you find that your brake system is working properly.
