I recently bought a 1986 F150 4x4 for a plow truck, the truck has a 351, C6 trans and a np 208 transfer case, my problem is i cant get the 4 wheel drive to work, the shifter moves thru all the positions and the 4x4 indicator light on the dash comes on in both 4 lo and 4 hi.
both front hubs are engaging (first thing i checked) I just dont seem to be getting any power to the front driveshaft.
Any advice on what to check next? I'm a complete noob to 4x4s so I'm really scratching my head here.
Lock both hubs in, and then with the transfer case in 2wd, try to turn the front driveshaft. If you can turn it, then you have a problem up front, probably one of the hubs is not locking in.
If that works and you can't turn the front driveshaft, then unlock the hubs and get the front driveshaft to were you can turn it by hand. Then get up in the cab and put the transfer case in 4 hi. Then get underneath and try to turn the driveshaft again. If the driveshaft will turn, then the problem is going to be the transfer case.
thanks for the reply, that was the first thing i did, with the hubs unlocked and the transfer case in both 4 hi, and 4 low the driveshaft spins, with the hubs locked in the driveshaft doesn't spin.
any idea what might be broke in the transfer case to cause this? I would think if the chain snapped the case would bind up, but everything turns freely, no wierd noises or anything.
Make sure the linkage is working going in and out of the transfer case. Other than that, it looks like a tear down or replacement. I have never had one apart, but if I ever have problems, I think it is simple enough to tackle a rebuild myself.
figured I'd update this, I got a replacement transfer case and installed it today 4wd is now working I havent had a chance to tear apart the old one yet to see whats broke but the old fluid has alot of metal in it so I figure something got chewed up.
All in all it went pretty smoothly, took me about 4 hours to replace.
Just joined. I replaced the front seal in my transfer case same vehicle/motor this past summer. Had problems getting the new universal seated with the new spring clamps-had to resort to the older ones that came off of it. My fears just we're realized-the universal fell out the other day crossing tracks-sounded like the shaft was on the ground-took it out of 4 wheel drive and proceeded home. Is there anything else damage wise I should be looking for when replacing the universal ? What did that transfer case run ya ? Thanks.
