Power Steering noises

Hello all,
I have a 2000 F250 w/ 7.3 I love the truck, but have learned far too many repairs. Just finished a fuel bowl rebuild and now power steering pump is whining at me. Belt is only a few months old, Fluid is fine. But pump still whines. I'll replace pump is necessary, but don't know if there are other suspects? Any thoughts? Thanks for ANY/ ALL help.

No, you're pretty much on target here. A power steering pump that whines is the first sign of a failure. Just be sure it is the pump and not the belt tensioner or the alternator that is making the noise.

Rebuild kit

Thanks for confirming what i thought. I looked up a replacement. And found a rebuild kit. Has anyone done it that way. Kit was $15, rebuilt was about $60. I would just buy the rebuild for $60, but have no way of pulling the pulley off and was wondering if i rebuild it, would i have to remove the pulley. I guess it would make sense to buy the rebuilt one and pull the pulley. Is it an easy rebuild? Thanks

Henry I ran into the pulley issue on the F700 alternator a couple weeks ago. I took in the old one for matching and core charge. After Car Quest worked hard visually finding a physical match it had a smaller size pulley on it. The guy walked it across the street to their machine shop and came back with the OEM pulley on the new rebuilt alternator and there was no charge.

I find kits are cheaper but I always come up short of the one tool I need to complete the job in a simple and timely manner. Plus buying rebuilt means you can get another one if found defective.

Check for air in the lines first. I had the same problem with the pulley and ended up walking to a shop with a press with it in a bag. I would line up the pulley press part first and some parts stores will do it free.

There is no way to check for air per say but you can remove do a quick bleed by lifting the front wheels off the ground, starting the engine and turning the steering wheel lock to lock a couple dozen times.
Unless you ran the fluid low or disconnected the steering lines there shouldn't be any air in the lines to being with.

Just look for bubbles in the resevoir, I bled mine out by going to a gravel road and turning the wheels lock to lock several times. Oil level in the resevoir is important. Replace any oil that smells or looks burnt.

Yes bubbles in the resevoir would indicate air but unless the level was really low or the lines disconnected there should be no reason for air in the lines. However a quick bleed and maybe even a complete flush would be worth a shot.

Pump, Pads, and a rack?

Now truck seems to be pulling to left as i hit brakes. I just did the brakes 6 months ago and had the rotors turned. Everything has been fine since then. (well with brakes). Rims look dirty. I don't remember what brakes pads i put on, but i purchase the middle to upper in parts when given a choice. I would seem that i need a power steering pump and now brakes. But could my rack be acting up and causing these problems? Thanks

just a thought! but when you say "fluid is fine" do you mean its age and condition, or its level?? i know alot of guys do powersteering flushes. i did mine awhile back but i was replacing the high pressure hose at the same time.
its also has to be tranny fluid not powersteering fluid, (in case you didn't know).

Thanks, Fluid is fine now," meant that i topped it off with powersteering fluid. Am i suppose to add tranny fluid to power steering pump? Thanks.

Tranny fluild for the gassers and I believe it is the same for the smokers. I would flush the whole thing with Mercon V.

if its pulling pretty hard, that could mean a locked up brake caliper. this happened to me also right after i did all my brakes. if there is a burning smell after driving the truck for a while and rotor is hot to the touch this would be your problem. i know its not related to the power steering, but just thought i should throw it out there because a bad caliper could potentially catch on fire.

Thanks, Its not much of a pull. But rims have never looked so dusty. I'm just waiting for a day to deal with brakes and steering. Thanks again.
