Do all of the power steering pumps whine on these trucks ? My 87 and 79 both have that whine. The pumps look like they are plastic and do leak a little. If replacing them will stop the whine i will do it. I hate it when i am next to a chevy or dodge and they do that.

saganaw pumps are nicer than OEM but I just replaced my OEM pump with a refurb A1 Cardone and it doesn't whine at all now. IF it starts to whine again in the near future it will be getting the Sag Pump.
I had a saginaw pump on a 79 years ago and it was good. I will try NAPA again. They told me they were unable to get them now, that they were dropped. Maybe i will try a different NAPA store. Thanks
I'd say that a pretty high percentage of the Ford pumps whine, and my own personal opinion is that the whining doesn't start until the fluid runs low and the pump sucks in air. After that, you're going to have the whine regardless of the fluid level until the pump has been rebuilt or replaced.
The Ford pumps seem to have more issues with leaks than any GM pumps I have ever seen, so thus more low fluid levels and more whining pumps.
My high pressure line is starting to go, so I've got to replace that before my pumps starts whining too. I've got a 1990 and it still has a quiet pump, but still has less than 100K miles too, so that helps.
I can hear my next-door neighbor coming home from a block away due to the whining pump in his Windstar (biggest piece of crap van I have ever seen and he would agree, but that's a topic for another forum).
I recently used "Mag 1 Power steering sealer" in my 91 and it completely eliminated the whine. Not saying that will work the same for you, but it's cheaper and easier than jumping right to a pump swap.
Something else you may want to consider as well is a fluid flush and fill. A couple of years ago I needed to replace one of the seals in my steering gear box. After all fresh, new fluid was added the whine was gone- at least until a couple of weeks ago when I used the Mag 1 sealer.
