300 motor problem

I went out this morning to let my truck warm up and when I went back out it was missing out some. Thought it was just loaded up so i took off in it and it took little bit for it to clear up. I went to get my wife some medicine and noticed that it was blowing blue smoke out of the back of the truck. Got to the store and it was missing out again and smoking pretty bad. Took a look under the hood and seen that the #2 spark plug was loose and had a lot of oil around the spark plug hole.

I had a plug wrench with my so I cleaned the plug some and put it back in and tightened up. Drove it back home the smoke wasn't as bad but it was still missing out some.

Do you guys think it dropped a valve or the guides a just bad? I put new seals on the valve stems before I put the motor in. It has only ran about 2000 miles on the motor since I put it in the truck.

I believe I'd recheck all the plugs first. Eliminate the ignition system as the culprit since the smoke cleared up after working on the number two plug.

All the plugs are tight, but it still has a miss in it. It still smoked some on the way home and I haven't drove since then. I almost sure it has something to do with a valve. I'm going to take valve cover off and see is there might be a pushrod issue or if I need to take the head off and investigate futher.

I plan on digging into tomorrow morning.

Well I went out and run the truck for a few minutes this morning and sure enough it is still smoking. I pulled all the plugs one at a time and only the #2 spark plug has oil all over it. All other plugs looked normal.

I pulled the valve cover off and the rubber seal on the valve stem is still there.

Has anyone ever ran across this before? I looks like to me that the head gasket might of gave out and the piston has been sucking the oil from the push tube holes into the cylinder. Would a worn valve stem guide cause that much oil in just one cylinder? The rings couldn't of give out on one cylinder could it?

I still have a set of standard rings I never used, but I'd hate to have to pull the motor to put new rings in.

Well I know what it is now. I took the head off and there was a big puddle of anti freeze in the #2 cylinder. There was some oil also. I guess the smoke wasn't all oil it must of been some antifreeze burning up too.

I checked the head and it is flat which I thought it would be. The guy I bought it from had the head milled flat.

Try try again.

Ouch, that doesn't sound like a fun discovery. Think that's something a new gasket should just clear up?

That plug being loose probably is a coincidence,I've had a few of the darn things come loose on me.I would look the deck over good and be real fussy about my gasket choice and clean the head bolts and holes and use a little anti-seize on the threads, then get out the torque wrench and take her to specs in the proper sequence. Now would be a good time to take care of any doubts about the valves.Good luck and I hope it seals proper.

I clean the head and block real good. The head just had a valve job before I put it on. I bought a felpro gasket, was going to get a severe duty one but they had to order it.

I think the problem might of been my fault to begin with. When I put the motor together I put the head on I forgot to put the rubber seals on the valve stems. I reused the head gasket since I didn't start the motor or anything. It has run good until just recently, but I have been playing with the jets to get them right.

If it does it again I'll just put the old head that was on the motor to begin with. I kinda hate to do that since this head has bowl work and 3 angle valve job.

I got to go out and finish it up, just have the intake and exhaust to put back on. Hopefully I can finish it before I have to go to work. Hopefully this will fix it. I've never had a problem like this before.

Well it's not good. I think the head is bad. I got it started and it still has smoke/water vapor coming out of it.

I'm going to start cleaning the other head I have up so I can put it on.

Are you sure it's not left over residue in the exhaust?or is so heavy that you know what it is?I would take that head and have it magnafluxed for cracks when you get it off,you will have to pull it down, but at least you won't have to waste a head with so much work in it,if it isn't cracked, and you don't want to have it shaved again and then find out it's cracked.Sorry about your bad luck, extra work and disappointment really suck.

you need to use new head bolts, they are torque to spec, and will streach when used too much

The one exhaust pipe was just nothing but steam coming out of it for about 5 minutes straight. At least I have something else to drive and can fix it right. Kinda sucks though that I have to do it outside and it is getting colder than normal.

I'm going to start cleaning the other head up tomorrow. Hopefully by this weekend I'll be back in my truck.

I'll get new head bolts just to make sure there won't be a problem with them.

Can't you just rotate the piston's up (head will B off) w/o pullin the motor to do that?

As the others have said "Good Luck".

44.5* here, luckly. I'm just in for a cupa - in the middle of a Carter YF rebuild.
May B catch ya @ lunch.

Thanks for all the good luck's out there. I'll probably need it before I'm done.

I' don't think I'll have to do anything to the piston's and rings.

I went out and run it for a minute and then checked the the 1st 3 plugs and didn't see any anti freeze in the cylinders. I may try and run it a little longer tomorrow and see if the water vapor clears up in the exhaust.

If not it's back to cleaning up the head.

I would just double what the guy said about having the head magnafluxed for cracks if putting on a different one. Of course a valve job would be good too.

I know what it's like to be let down after a lot of hard work, time and money. Good luck.
