Okay everyone help me take down my friend who is a Dodge owner and keeps bashing me for owning a Ford. I need all the dirt on Dodge (spesifically the ram 1500) and why Ford is better.
Chrysler (Dodge) took government bailout money, prior to taking bankruptcy. In order to emerge from bankruptcy, a sale of most of the "old" Chrysler assets was made to the "new" Chrysler, which is partially owned by Fiat. This sale was financed, at least in part, by the government.
Ford, on the other hand, has done what it needed to do to survive without bailout money or bankruptcy.
The newest Dodge 1500's are weak compared to all the other trucks including the older Dodges. I honestly think the Dakota would be a better truck than the newest 1500 Ram. The new 1500's only tow like 8500 pounds(Ford is between 10-12k) it has an independent rear suspension which IMHO = weak, but one of these days I'm sure all trucks will have it unfortunatley.
The new 1500 Dodge trucks were built to cater to guys and gals who don't use their trucks for trucklike stuff very much. So you might think of them as a heavy duty Honda Ridgeline, because thats what I think of them as. Although I don't hate the Ram 1500, I really love the bed storage space, the truck does look good, the interior is great, and the Hemi does have good power, but other than that it's not very good. Why do people have to talk smack on other peoples stuff? I don't get it myself, even if I don't think the Honda Ridgeline is very good I don't talk crap to people who own them(I wait till I get on the net with people who probably also dislike the Honda lol).
Mopar notoriously has terrible transmissions... Back in the mid 90's they used plastic lines and they were bioling over trans fluid. Sure the hemi makes great power, but it has higher compression and more cubes... I can pretty much gaurantee you it won't last as long as a 5.4.
I don't think the Ram has independent rear suspension (IRS). It does, however, have a coil spring rear suspension in the 1500 model. That gives it a nice ride, but it can't haul jack... Leaf springs are the way to go for hauling stuff. If you want a good off road suspension, then 3 link is the way, but no manufacturer offers that in a truck from th factory.
Also, the Hemi gets crappy mileage. my neighbor gets 12 on the highway at best, empty.
There is a reason that Daimler-Benz offloaded Chrysler a few years back... they were too much of a liability. Cost that company billions. Good luck to Fiat, although Fiat doesn't have a great reputaition for reliablitiy either (Fix It Again Tony). I would rather have a dodge nowadays than a chevy, but as far as reliability is concerned, the Ford is definately the way to go. Capabilty too. Ford was recently name the most reliable domestic car maker.
