my lie o meter isnt working (dead)quick question do you have to take down entire upper console to get at the guts of it? I have one from a v10 this should be the same as the one in my diesel?
cheers
and thanx for the info
This is a common problem. There are several resistors on the display panel's circuit board that have come loose or fallen off. The chips look like a flat silver bar about 3/8" long x 3/16" wide and have a 2-digit number like 60 or 70 on them.
You do have to remove the console completely to get at the circuit board but it is simple. It is only 2 screws in either the sunglasses or door opener compartment (It's been awhile). Once you remove the screws, you have to pop the rear off by pulling down on it. It feels as if you might break it but it's OK. Now pull rearward until the tabs at the front of the console are released and it is loose. Just detach the wiring harness near the front and you can take it inside to do the rest. Put it on a towel so you don't scratch it up.
WARNING! Watch out for a falling chip as you remove the console. One might have completely fallen off of the circuit board. They are very small and hard to find otherwise.
It took longer for my soldering iron to warm up than it did to remove the console and circuit board. Just make sure you use a lower wattage iron and you might as well re-do all the chips at once.
Here is a link to a thread with DETAILED instructions to an easy fix. See post #4.
My lie o meter died in my old 00 X. All I did was invest in a pencil soldering iron and fixed it myself. Worked great even when I sold it. I had 1 chip that fell off completely.
Recalibrate it so that it is closer to what mpg I am getting. I KNOW for a fact that I am not getting 29mpg
29 MPG! I wish I could help you but I know of no way to recalibrate this. Have you re-soldered the resistors? It's possible one of them is just loose enough to cause the reading to be off. If that doesn't help, is there a way you could borrow a display from a friend's truck? If so, hook it up to your console to see if the problem lies in the board or somewhere else? If it is not the board, I don't envy the adventure you will have in finding the source of the problem.

Good Luck!

It was within 1-2 mpg stock. Once I added a tuner, it went up to like 20 and when I went with Stage II single shots and programs, it went way up. I think it is the mods that screwed it up. It is shooting fuel in smaller pulse widths and the computer is thinking that it is using less fuel and hence the higher mpg.
