Air cleaner keeps falling off!!!!

I have an odd problem as the title states. First time it fell off, it bent my fan which killed my radiator. got new radiator and attached a cable to the air cleaner to the firewall. Although, it did not harm the radiator this time, it still fell off. It looks like I have a replacement carb and the lip where the air cleaner clamp affixes to is too short.

clamp is very tight and it falls off while driving. I can hit the air cleaner and make it fall off in static position too, so I know the clamping surface is less than optimum.

any have a stock carb or at least a picture of one.

any after market air cleaner available to fit? However, I would probably hav eteh same problem.

is there and does anyone have/ make a 2bbl or 4 bbl intake for a 56 I6? I could use the center stud to attach the air cleaner.

The stock 56 /223 air cleaner has a thumbknob screw to tighten it to the carb neck. If the neck is too short.....maybe a small chrome air cleaner from auto zone might work.
There was 1 on my carb when I bought the truck, and I found the original air cleaner and removed the little one.
That may work.......what is the carb diameter at top?

I like cliffords intake and header setup. at 625, its def a back thought at the moment.

I would say the carb to OD is around 2.25 - 2.5" w/o actually measuring it. it only has maybe .25-.38" lip to clamp to which is part of the problem. I was think going the chrome a/c route as well. worst case ,I 'll need to find an orginal carb

Measure the diff between the carb. neck outside dia.and the clamp inside dia. and make a filler (piece of plastic, metal etc.) to make up the difference. Slip it on inside the clamp then slip on carb neck and clamp as required to get it tight. That is if your talking about a clamp on the outside of the carb neck air cleaner. A piece 1/2 inch wide and ever how long it would take to circle the carb neck as many times as necessary to take up the slack to allow the clamp to work. Pretty low tech solution, but should work fine.
Just a thought.

Old Oil Bath Air Cleaner Threads

takid455,

First off, welcome to FTE as I see you are just getting started. The folks here don't bite (much) and the atmosphere is pretty friendly. We'll all do our best to help you out - even if that means we have to actually provide useful information.

I see you are one of only a few elite members of the F-250 owner's club. I too have an F-250 and it's the same year as yours - 1956. There are only a couple other folks I know of that have the bigger, better F-250. Of course, I've been AWOL for a number of years and don't know any of the newer folks, so maybe our club is a little bigger than when I last checked.

There are a couple of old threads with detailed discussion of the different mounting styles for the oil bath air cleaners. Here are the links:

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...lter-woes.html
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/3...r-cleaner.html

Some of the photo links in those threads are no longer valid, so I went out the the garage and took some new photos for you.

This is the original air cleaner for my 272 CID Y-block.

This is a replacement I bought on eBay. You'll notice it has a flanged connection, not the straight connection you can see on the original air cleaner above, nor on my original carburetor below.

There are two types of attachments we could find (flanged and straight) and a couple different diameters as discussed in those older threads.

Hope this helps. If not, let us know and we'll see if we can't figure it out with you.

I am going to try a filler (rubber/ high friction) material between the a/c and the carb and test. I like the flanged style a little better. seems like a better design.
the carb top measures approx 2 19/64 OD and 2.08 ID roughly. the clifford stuff seems nice, but for the money, I would probably find a late model 302 drivetrain to swap. keeping it stock right now as it runs and I have other irons on the fire.
