3 or 4 speed on a 260 V8
I have a 223 in my truck now and it runs great. I also plan on doing the body work and getting a paint job on my truck before I do anything to the motor. However, there is a 260 V8 for sale near by for $100. I am probably going to pick it up. What my question is....is there a four speed manual that will work in the truck ( w/o granny gear) or will my 3-speed thats in there now bolt up to it?

1962/64 Fairlane/Meteor / 1963/64 Falcon/Comet / 1965 Mustang's assembled before 8/23/64.
260's have a FIVE bolt bell housing bolt pattern, as do 221's and 289's before 8/23/64.
From 8/23/1964, there were no more 260's. 289's have a SIX bellhousing bolt housing bolt pattern. 289's were not installed in trucks, either.
The only M/T's available with the 260 were the Ford Type 3.03 all syncro 3 speed (what your 1964 F100 has) and the Warner T-10 4 speed (T-10: 1963/64 & early 1965 Mustangs).
Instead of messing with an anemic 260, that doesn't have enough torque to pull a sick trollop off a porcelain device...why not install its larger brother instead, the 302.
btw: Well known restorers Rule of Thumb = Mechanical work FIRST! Paint second, upholstery last.
Painting a truck before doing the mechanicals is an accident waiting to happen. There's the real possibility of scratching the paint...or worse.

So it will hook up to my trans...thats good. Just to make sure though, it came with an aluminum bell housing attached to it ( I believe 5 bolts) would that be a bell housing for a manual of auto trans?
But yeah...I figured thats what people would think about the 260, but I like to be a little different and a same year small V8 is more appealing to me (and more affordable to build) than a Y-block. I'm just looking to get a little more than stock Hp out of it and I don't need much torque because its just gonna be a cruiser.

Thanks. Won't be able to post those until tommorow though. I just have the computer at work. As far as everything I have read, most or all 289/302 parts will go onto the 260. It looks like some parts leave out the fact that they will work for 260 becuase most people have the 289/302. Is this true or are there definately 289 parts (oil pump, water pump, ignition, etc are the parts I'm concerned about) that won't work on the 260?

These early engines had an aluminum waterpump and timing cover, different harmonic balancer.
These parts will not work with the later blocks. The 221 was used 1962/63, the 260 from 1962 thru 8/22/64.
From 8/23/64, the bellhousing uses 6 bolts, the waterpump and timing cover are cast iron, these same parts were used in 302's which were introduced in the Spring of 1968.
The same oil pump (C20Z6600A) fits: 221/260/289/302 thru at least the 1980's. The ignition parts are the same thru 1973.
1974 was the year Ford introduced Never...uh...DuraSpark electronic ignition.

timing cover
NumberDummy I believe you misspoke, never seen a cast iron car 289 302 timing cover, just aluminum.
