Anyone add EFI to an FE? Are aftermarket kit's available only? It seems it may be more cost effective to swap in a 460 and add EFI to it. Opinions are welcome.
GULP....Never mind. Seems this is a low return for investment project. I'll stay with the carbed 390. A 460 option was offered to me recently. I think I'll pass. Thank you for the info!
The horsepower of an engine is NOT controlled by the EFI, but the base motor you build. Then you choose the appropiate EFI System for that engine. The quoted HP sounds pretty much like the stock horsepower, low compression and tetarded timing and all.
I've done several of them. But they are not inexpensive. By the time you get the intake stuff, injectors, and controller you are looking $4 grand or more. Some setups, like the Weber lookalike deal, end up closer to $8 grand (!). If you have fabricating skills you could proably harvest junkyard parts and electronics mated to a single plane intake and get there for under 2....
A couple EFI project videos for the entertainment...
[QUOTE=SIXD9R;8195908]Did you try looking on Summit Racing? They have some kits available for less than 2K. I just searched on kits for a 390. Still a lot of money though.
YUP! LOL I was gonna build it, put in the truck for the kid's. They better learn the old school carb methods of tuning.
If I'm understanding things correctly (a big IF) the FAST link I posted earlier is to self-programming EFI. Some of the kits on Summit require you to program it via a laptop.
EFI is great, but carb set ups are pretty good these days too, so it's really a budget/"Wow" factor etc methinks....
